Our Canvas Corp Home Decor Guest Designer, Marie Pickles shows us how she turned her Farmhouse Kitchen canvas panel into a rustic notice board, on which she can hang her keys and display important notes.
Marie shares with us her thinking behind the project…
I thought the Farmhouse Fabric Panels were real cute but they could be even better with a little personalisation… Some fabric paints would be required. To give the painted panel centre stage, what better thing to do than make a Notice Board? That would most definitely set the panel off perfectly. Some burlap in a nice bright colour to frame the panel and some additional hardware like cup hooks for keys or dog leads and some elastic to hold all those important letters, invitations and appointments in place. Yep, that should do it. So I dug into my Canvas Corp DT sample box… fabric paints – definitely! fabric panels – yep! fabulous avocado burlap – yep! some fabric to back the project – yep! Good to go.

You will also need some tools:

Sewing machine, Matching Threads
Pins, Stapler
Paint brushes
Marker pens, Quilting Ruler
Using your chosen wadding cover the MDF panel. Ensure you have sufficient to wrap over the board and to be fixed to the back of the panel. Staple into place ensuring there is a snug fit with no wrinkles or gaps. Place the panel centrally and use this as your marking guide. Mark lines on the top of the board to determine the placement of the panel. Press the fabric panel well and set aside to cool. Using the burlap, cut strips sufficiently wide to join to the panel and then extend over the back of the board by at least 2-3″. This will provide a sufficient allowance to overlap and provide space to stretch and staple the fabrics to the board.
Place the fabric panel on a flat surface and paint the areas you choose. Fabric paints can be blended to mix colours. I chose several elements to paint. Try to stay within the lines as it can be difficult to remove fabric paint. Heat will set most fabric paints, allow the paint to dry naturally then heat set from behind to make it permanent.
Use elastic to create a grid to hold letters and other papers to the board. Cut the strips of elastic to the size required however they will be sewn into place tighter to create the required tension. Once the elastic strips are in place, turn the panel over and lay a layer of polyester wadding in place. This can be kept in position with a layer of fabric glue spray or a few dots of fabric glue. You can see the tension on the fabric panel in the photograph.
Time to sew the burlap strips to the elasticated panels, start by sewing the horizontal strips first then place the vertical strips on each side and sew them. Keep the stitch length on the sewing machine small as this piece of work needs to be stretched into position before fixing to the board. Once all the panels are in place, lay over the marks you have drawn on the board. Put some drawing pins in place to hold the main panel in place and once you are happy with the placement, put some staples into the seam allowance of the panel and the frame.
Once you have the central panel stapled in place you can start to pull the frame over to the back of the board and staple that in place. Turn the corned over and staple them securely.
Using the fabric reserved for the back, lay it carefully in position and turn the edge under, staple into place leaving the back of the project neat and tidy.
Turn the project so the front is facing; mark and place the cup hooks where you want them. Turn the project over so the back is facing you, measure and screw in the eye hooks for hanging the noticeboard up. Make sure these eye hooks are straight and an equal distance from the top of the board. Feed through some cord or hanging wire and that should be the notice board complete.
