“Awesome” Mixed Media Heart shaped Canvas

A canvas is the perfect homedecor gift, showcasing a beautiful memory. Heart-shaped canvases are something other than your basic square, but can be a little challening when working on them.
Though 7gypsies Architextures may give off a vintage vibe, they can be used perfectly in modern mixed media scrapbooking. Crew member Mandy Leever-Koel used various Architextures elements on her canvas, proving their versatile style once again.
Tattered Angels mists, glams and kits were used in different ways too. Mandy tried 2 different methods for re-creating rust on her chipboard, showing that you can achieve the rusty effect with several Tattered Angels products.

“With Father’s Day coming up, I thought it would be nice to do a photoshoot with our little family, and my brother and his family, so we could give our dad a nice picture of us. Since I have my own DSLR, we sought out a quiet, rural place and brought along a tripod and remote control. (Sadly, that remote control didn’t work and I had to use the self-timer in the old-fashioned way, but 10 seconds proved to be enough to get in place hahaha…)
Needless to say these things always go different than planned, especially with a 4- and 7-year old boy. But one picture I shot of them while they were frolicking on a picknick table, proved to be quite awesome. I edited it to black and white, with just blue remaining, tweeked some more, and voila. Instant inspiration! I knew the picture had to be used with grungy, rusty, cool elements and textures. The heart holding it all, softens it a little,” says Mandy.

STEP 1.
Use gel medium to cover the surface of your canvas and adhere the Recollections (for Michaels) ‘Ivory Rust Metal’ paper to its surface.STEP 2.
Cut some tin tiles from the 7gypsies Architextures – Tin Tiles Onyx pack, and brush some white gesso over their surface, then wipe a barely damp cloth over  to smoothen the color.STEP 3.
Spray some Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist – Denim Blue and Navy Blue through the Tim Holtz ‘Heart Scribbles’ (073) stencil STEP 4.
Give the wood word ‘Awesome’ a coat of white gesso first, let dry, then paint and spray withTattered Angels Glimmer Mist Denim Blue and Navy Blue. Spraying will give a more intense color, sometimes however painting will. Play until you have reached the desired color intensity.
STEP 5.
Time to bring out the Tattered Angels Naturally Aged Paint System Bare Metal – Rusty Metal. Follow the instructions in the package and you should end up with a rusty ‘Awesome’.  STEP 6.
Blend TCW Light & Fluffy Modeling Paste with Tattered Angels Glimmer Glam – Pitch Black. The Glam has a good itense color, and the big glitters provide some structure in the mixture.
Apply through the ‘xxxx’ stencil on several places. (Sorry for being such a messy scrapper…)STEP 7.
Apply the mixture along the heart’s edge as well, using a spatula to create an uneven strcuture. STEP 8.
For the chipboard stars (Creative Embellishments) I tried a slightly different approach. I mixed white gesso with Tattered Angels Glimmer Glam – Pitch Black and added texture powder to make it more firm. I applied this very uneven. This was the base for my chipboard stars.  (I also used this mixture on the edges of the heart again, giving it more color diversity.)

I dried using my heat tool, hoping to create even more strcucture. Then I sprayed Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist – Graphite. Dried with my heat tool. Then, I added Tattered Angels Glimmer Glam – Bon Bon and dried using the heat tool once again. This will create bubbles.
The result of this rusty look is satisfying to me too, so if you don’t own any of the Tattered Angels Naturally Aged Paint Kits, it shows there are plenty of other ways to achieve rusty effects.
STEP 9.
I used the star stickers from the 7gypsies Architextures Junque Pack – Cabin, as well as the stars that were on the inside of their package, and adhered them on my canvas.

The closure on the left side of the canvas/picture, was cut from the paper ‘Painted Doors’ of the 7gypsies Architextures 8×8 paper pad.

The mesh underneath the picture, was made using a mesh-pattern die and my Big Shot. I cut it from blue metallic paper and added Tattered Angels Glimmer Glam – Bon Bon to re-create the rust effects once more. (Also on the edges of the heart canvas!)
STEP 10.
I decided to add a text rub-on from the 7gypsies Architextures Rub-On ‘Live’ package above the title as a finishing touch.
‘Make your own rules’
