Birds in the Garden on Burlap

Who is ready for Spring?  We are with both hands up.  It has not been cold for that long, but we are just ready for the birds to start singing, the flowers to start blooming and the grass to be green again.  Crew Member Chris Pozzi wows us with a fun painted and fussy cut project that is so fun to do and will remind you of Spring coming with every little detail.
Fussy Cut Flowers
I have seen a reverse canvases (where they create on the back side of the canvas) and I have been wanting to try and create one. Lately I am obsessed with birds and flowers ( I must be longing for spring). So I decided to combine both and my Birds in the Garden Canvas was born. This project is way outside my comfort zone as I am primarily a scrapbooker and card maker, but sometimes its good to push your creative boundaries. – Chris Pozzi

To see how Chris put this entire project together take a look at this fun slide show we put together.

Start with Canvas Corp’s basic paper and turn them into your own colorful papers.

canvas corp printed paper
Create Flowers – Start punching your flowers using your L Bloom and XL Bloom Punches. For Large flowers use 2 XL punches and 2 L punches. You can make extra full flowers using 3 XL and 3 L punches. For the Small flowers use 3 L punches. I used 8 Large and 8 Small flowers, made from a mixture of printed Canvas Corp Brands paper and Ivory cardstock. Using a hole punch, punch a small hole in the center of each punched flower. Place a brad in the enter of your punched flowers. Fan out your layers.
how to make paper flowers
Create Flowers – Spray your fanned flowers with water. I found it was best to spray both sides. You want the paper to soften up. Then scrunch your flower up around the brad. Slowly peel back the layers curving the petals as you go. Set flowers aside to dry as you continue making the rest of your flowers. Note – its ok if you lose a few petals from your flowers.
mist paper with water to create your flower
Create Flowers – Separate your completed flowers into 4 Color groups. Set the Ivory Group (no added color aside). Spray each group with Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists in either Be Mine, Summer Glow or Valentine Pink. Set aside to dry.
misted paper flowers
Create Mini Flowers – Using your Small Flower punch, Punch 8-10 small flowers. Mist flowers with Tattered Angels Mountain Mist Glimmer Mist. I did let some color pool in the center of my flowers, allowing the mica to accumulate.
painted vines
Create Vines – Punch Vine border punch from Ivory Cardstock. Trim vines into smaller sections. Next you will be layering your mists to create variegated color on your vines. First mist your vines with Tattered Angels English Ivy Glimmer Mist leaving some “white” areas. Next layer color using your Tattered Angels Kiwi Glimmer Mist. Finish your color layers by misting Tattered Angels Snowy Pine over the vines. Set Aside.
bird art to color - blue bird
From Canvas Corp Brands Birds and Bees on Ivory Bird, fussy cut bird pair and bird house. Starting with the Bird Pair, paint branch with a mixture of Tattered Angels It’s Brown, Nougat, and Chalk. (note save this mixture for the next step.) Paint one bird with Tattered Angels Nougat Glimmer Mist. Add accents with Tattered Angels Snowy Pine Glimmer Mist. Paint the second bird with Tattered Angels Snowy Pine Glimmer Mist, adding accents Tattered Angels Patina Glimmer Mist. Paint the toes and beaks with a mixture of Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists in Nougat and Summer Glow.
birdhouse
Using your fussy cut birdhouse, Paint the post first with Tattered Angels Nougat. Accent the post using the mixture of Tattered Angels It’s Brown, Nougat, and Chalk. Paint the birdhouse with Tattered Angels Chalkboard -Chalk. Paint the Roof and accents lines with Tattered Angels Nougat. Add additional accents with Tattered Angels Mountain Mist. Paint one bird with Tattered Angels Mountain Mist, adding highlight to the wings with Tattered Angels Patina. Paint the second bird first with Tattered Angels Patina, accenting with Tattered Angels Mountain Mist

Gathering all your creations, begin laying out your project. You can see I created some mini banners from Canvas Corp Brands Wheat Burlap. Begin laying out your canvas. I realized I would need a little “support” for my flowers so I cut a piece of cardboard and covered it with burlap using spray adhesive and then glued it to the inside of my burlap canvas.

Decorate your Canvas – Start by adding lace around your canvas. Add pearl accents over your lace. Add threaded buttons to your corners. Layout your layered flowers and vines, gluing once you are happy with their placement. Add paper doily inside your canvas. Add small flowers, and pearl sprigs as accents. Pull threads from Canvas Corp Wheat Burlap and add as accents in your flowers. Add Birdhouse and attach Canvas Corp Brands Jute rope to hang your banners. Add banners and clothes pins. Add you bird pair and butterfly to your canvas.
Watering Can Collection with flowers - canvas corp brands
Starting with ivory and black paper and Glimmer Mist Paints, Chris was able to transform her project into the most vibrantly colored flowers and trims.  Canvas Corp Papers are made with recycled papers, the are a matte finish and they are 80# so they stand up well to water and mist paint and allow you to form the petals into flowers.
