Cabinet Doors Repurposed Into Chalkboard Sign

If you have spent time strolling down the sidewalk window shopping or dining at your favorite bistro, chances are you have seen at least one chalkboard sidewalk sign. Some stores and restaurants have beautiful chalkboard art to display their menus and what sales they are having. Turns out these signs are so easy to make, and can be a fun and attractive decoration to your front porch!

You could build your own simple wooden frame, or you can repurpose some old cabinet doors like Marie Nicole did! With a little hardware, a few power tools, and some chalkboard paint, you can have your own bistro sign within a few hours. This would be a fun weekend project, so read on to see how Marie made hers.

DIY chalkboard bistro sign. These old cabinet doors were perfect for turning into a sidewalk sign. All you need is some hardware and some chalkboard paint!

MATERIALS:

THE PROCESS…

I have always loved the artwork and witty sayings that businesses put on their sidewalk signs. When I came across these old cabinet doors, my first thought was that they would work perfectly for making my own bistro chalkboard sign! I looked up pictures of other signs to see how they were put together, and discovered that they were very simple to make!

I took a trip to Lowes with my husband and together we picked up a few hinges that we thought would work on this sign. My husband and his father actually put the hardware on, so I can’t take any credit but the process is very simple. They just placed the hinges on the inside of the sign, and then drilled in the screws to hold the hinges in place. Its not a bad idea to drill a few pilot holes, either, to make sure your screws go in properly.

Here’s a photo of the inside of the sign so you can see how the hinges are attached…

With the hinges on, I went ahead with the next step and painted on the chalkboard paint. I taped off the inside panel of the cabinet doors with painters tape to make sure I would get clean lines when painting. Then, I took a piece of 80 grit sandpaper and roughed up the area to be painted just to make sure the paint would go on easier.

Using Painter’s Tape is a great way to make your project look professional.  It takes a little extra time, but so worth it.

After the paint was dry, the next step was to write something using a regular piece of chalk! I looked up some photos of different signs with fun sayings and found one I liked. I lightly wrote my quote on with the chalk, and when I was happy with how it looked, I went over it again with my chalk and made the letters darker. I filled in any awkward empty spots with a few simple doodles.

I then took my sign out to my front porch and set it up next to my front door. It looks cute by itself, but just to take it up another notch, I added a burlap flower and some canvas from Canvas Corp on the top…

The canvas garland comes in 2 widths, 2″ and 3″ and is perfect for accenting your craft projects, making a banner, holiday decor and more.  You can leave it the  natural color or tint it with Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist.

I love the finished product! It’s so fun to have a chalkboard sign out on my front porch. I plan on changing up the message on it for the seasons or for special events. It would even be fun to use this sign to decorate for weddings, showers, or parties. Lots of great ideas and possibilities!

How cute is the finished product! Like Marie said, this sign is so versatile and can be used in a million different ways! Put it outside your shop or use it for your booth at a craft or trade show, or just use it in your own personal home decor. This is such an easy DIY you could do it in one day or make it a weekend project.
