Create Beautiful Interior Design Color Boards

If you are looking for creative ways to set yourself apart from other designers in your area, consider offering interior design color boards to your clients.  No worries if you do not have the sketching or drawing skills, focus on the colors, furniture pieces, finishes and other details and use furniture stickers to layout the floor plan.  Creating visual images of the space is a great way to help your client see the future space and work together make the right decisions on color, floor plan, furniture purchases and more.

You can create your boards in a wide range of sizes based on your clients needs from 8.5”x11” to as large as 20”x30”, so consider where the boards will be stored and how they will be used.  Working in a smaller version allows the design board to be mobile and travel with you to the job site, retail stores and design houses.  If you are working on a series of rooms, consider making one board for each area in the home or if your client is not sure about the final design concept, consider making a series of boards with various color or floor plans to help them visually make their final design decisions.

Begin by collecting swatches of fabrics, carpet, wood finishes, flooring, etc; next print or cut out images of furniture, cabinetry , accessories, art, etc; and finally create the furniture space plan for the room.  If you have a few options you can create multiple floor plans and Velcro them to the board or use repositionable stickers to recreate the space plan with the client.

Step 1:  Working in ¼” scale allows you to measure one square for each foot in the space.  Feel free to add doorways, windows, columns and other architectural details in the space.

Step 2:  Sketch or add furniture stickers into the space.  Keep in mind when sketching to use ¼” templates or ruler to keep your furniture to scale in the room.  Hint:  If sketching is what is holding you back try our repositionable furniture stickers that are available in our Room Spacing Kits or
can be purchased individually by room.

Step 3:  Add color to your floor plan to show the impact of color, design and details work together in the space.  Hint:  When adding color to stickers, use matte finish for ease when working with markers and color pencils.

Step 4:  Bring together your swatches, images, floor plan to create your Interior Design Color Board.  Hint:  If you are presenting to your client, always make a color copy or photograph of the board for your records and to share with new potential clients.
