DIY Photo Frame – November Challenge Reminder

Altered items are so much fun to create and they add an interesting flair to any home! We are in love with this canvas photo frame that Priscilla Lim created using two blank canvases, a few hinges, and a lot of Tattered Angels paints! She added such gorgeous color and texture!

The inspiration behind this project is from our November Challenge. The theme for this month’s challenge is “Movember”, and we want to see tons of fun projects that honor the special men in our life! Things that go well with the challenge theme are gears, rust, transportation, vintage items, and anything your mind and heart wants to include for your men! Also, there is still time to enter the challenge! Entries are being accepted up until December 5th, and one lucky winner will receive a prize package from Canvas Corp Brands!

I got tired of the usual photo frame and I wanted something unlike the standard scrap page or layout.
Thus, I put together 2 canvases and altered it into a book. You can either keep a stack of photos or just make it simple with a very special photo.

Materials Used
2Crafty Chipboards – Steampunk Gears Medium
2Crafty Chipboards – Checkerboard Clumps
2Crafty Chipboards – Chevron Bits
2Crafty Chipboards – Family Symbols
2Crafty Chipboards – ATC Georgian Frames
2Crafty Chipboards – Left over borders from Harlequinn Clumps
Prima Marketing – 3D Gloss Gel
Prima Marketing – Texture Paste in Graphite
Prima Marketing – Texture Paste in Platinum Crackle
Prima Marketing – Black Gesso
Daler Rowney – White Gesso
Newton & Winsor – Glass Beads Texture Gel
Tim Holtz Idealogy – Chit Chat StickerExpired Medical Gauze
Buttons
Hinges and screws from local value store
Recycled packaging from Prima Marketing
Step 1
To start off, you will need 2 canvases and hinges. I picked these items up from a thrift store – Daiso, where everything is SGD$2! The canvases I have used here are A5 in size. As it was not indicated if the canvases were already primed, I just went ahead to primed them both on the inside and outside with clear Gesso. The canvases need to be primed as I will be using loads of mix media to alter it.  Canvas Corp also offers canvases with out gesso – you can apply gesso where you wish or use the natural canvas.  To see the entire selection of stretched canvases and stretched burlap visit the shop.

Step 2
Once the gesso has dried, it’s time to start working on the canvas. For the very first layer, I painted both sides of the canvas with Tattered Angels Decor & DIY paint in Jade. Once dry, I gave it another later of paint for some dimension. For the 2nd layer, I have again used a sponge to brush on Tattered Angels Decor & DIY paint in Mankato. To further add texture to the covers, I randomly applied a layer of Prima Marketing texture paste in Graphite.

Step 3
While waiting for the texture paste to dry, it’s time to concoct my own paste. Referring to the picture, I have mixed together, Glass Beads Texture Gel, Glass Filler and Crackle Texture Paste. Once the paste is done, its time to alter the chipboards which are from 2Crafty Chipboards. Most of the chipboards are given 2 good coats of black gesso. Except for the words, My Men. For these words, I have coated it with white gesso and applied the paste over it. Once the paste has dried, it will have a really nice texture. I top it up with 3 layers of medium, Tattered Angels Glimmer Glaze in Cowboy, followed by Tattered Angels Stained Glass in Olive and Tattered Angels Decor & DIY Paint in Jade.

Step 4
Let’s go back to work on the front cover now. An expired piece of medical gauze is applied onto the cover with gel paste. Then we added embellishments from 7Gypies, 2Crafty chipboards and buttons were added before applying a good coat of paste which we have prepared earlier.

Step 5
Once the paste is dried and ready to be treated, it’s time to bring it to life with some colors! I started misting with Tattered Angels Chalkboard Glimmer Mist in Seven Seas. Then I added on Tattered Angels Glimmer Glaze in Cowboy for some rust effect. Once done, I added 2Crafty Chipboard as the 2nd layer of embellishments. Again, the Tattered Angels Glimmer Glaze in Cowboy is used for rust effect after which I dab on some white gesso to blend the chipboards better into the whole cover.

Step 6
For the internal surfaces and back cover, we need to blend them for a rustic look as well. To achieve this, I have misted them with Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist in Walnut Gold. On the back cover, I have slapped on a good blob of the premixed texture paste and pressed on one of the chipboard gears to simulate an emblem. Once the paste has dried, I misted the whole area with Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist in Graphite and touch it up with Tattered Angels Glimmer Glaze in Cowboy.

Step 7
Now that all sides of the canvases are done, it’s time to hinge them together and decorate the internal spaces. In my project, I have given it a simple look. But of course, it’s really up to you on how you want to use the internal space. Hope you like what I have shared today and feel free to leave any comments.
