Gina Ahrens – Crew Interview

It’s time for another post in our 2017 Canvas Corp Crew Interviews. We are extremely privileged to be able to work with a group of over a 100 of amazing designers from around the world. They have all come together to create, share ideas, support each other, let us know what we can do better and remind us of what we are doing well.  Our Crew members contribute projects to our blog, design with our products on their blogs, create models for our trade shows, packaging and other fun little projects.  We love to hear what they have to say, to be inspired by their work and to learn new things everyday.
Today, we get to know Gina Ahrens.

Where do you reside?
San Jose, CA USA

Describe your design style…
A mixed media painty smorgasbord of creative goodness. I love paint, watercolor, repurposing, mixed media… there really isn’t anything in art I don’t love to do or try.

Who or what do you give credit to inspiring your creativity?
I am most inspired by life and the world around me. The beauty of rusted metal and torn garbage… sitting next to the beauty of colorful blooming flowers and the ocean… just gorgeous!

What inspires you today?
Right now, I am fascinated by rust grungy torn artistic beauty… distressed fabrics, torn paper and cardboard, painted clear plastic packaging… all combined with some beautiful colors and layered to make a statement.

What is your favorite Canvas Corp Brand Product? and why? Just one please!!!
My favorite thing is the E-flute kraft corrugated paper. I love the 12 x 12 inch size along with the color selection.

We asked Gina to choose her favorite project she has created using CCB Products.

Why is it your favorite project?
It was totally unexpected. I started off painting the center piece by Relics and Artifacts intending to make a jewelry piece. But I started playing with more things like a banner piece from Canvas Corp and some of the black E-Flute… then the old hanger and some other things… this beauty was the result. It was a burst of pure creative engery and I totally love the results.

Do you teach and if so tell us a bit about what you teach, where you go and some of your favorite places?
I teach mixed media and watercolor on both YouTube and in my Facebook group which is called My Year 2017. I love to go on walks, to the beach and museums for inspiration, but my creative friends like Jeri Bellini, Anne Williamson and Cindy Utter are wonderful sources to boost the energy of my creative muse. When I am feeling in a real creative slump, there really isn’t any better teacher to bring you out of it than my favorite, Pauline Agnew.

I am the happiest doing…
Anything creative. I have my own space in my house I can go into and spend time. I turn up the music, get out the paints and glue… and just create. Other than quality time spent with my family, spending time in my creative space… yep, that really does it for me.

My favorite place to be creative…
My favorite place is at home in my home office and studio. I am comfortable here and feel a true sense of freedom to do whatever speaks to me.

Tell us one cool detail about your studio or craft space…
My room is all about my art and creativity… from the turquoise blue walls to the white shelves and cubbies. It is a great creative space made out of a very little room.

Tell us one thing fun about you we might not know…
I can’t sing…not at all. That doesn’t stop me from singing out loud when no one is home… the cameras are not rolling or I am in the car with the windows up. It is great to let loose and just be… dance to the music, sing out loud… don’t care about what others think. That’s a great thing.

Share with us anything about your creative life that you feel would inspire others…
I strive to learn more, practice every day and do something creative regularly. For me, making time for the creative side is imperative. Whether at home, on vacation or just at the doctor’s in the waiting room… I always have something with me. Make time regularly to do what you love. You won’t regret it.
