Create Your Own Mixed Media Wood Background – You & Me Canvas

Natural stretched canvas are one of the singnature products of Canvas Corp. We have a range of sizes available and if you can’t find the size you need, guess what?, we have custom sizes available, too! The raw, un-gessoed surface leaves it totally up to you when it comes to creativity. You can paint it, stamp it, use rub-ons or inks; you can gesso the canvas, use texture paste or block the colouring of some areas by running gel medium through a stencil… with a little bit of imagination and direction, you can even make it look like a plank of wood! Our Crew member, Kimberly, shows you how to achieve the distressed wood effect on our canvas. It’s so much easier than you think!

‘I can’t express how fun and simple this technique really is; how easy it is to alter your canvas to look like a plank of wood. I’m so happy how it all came together. I hope to inspire you to try it.’ – says Kimberly.

Materials used:
Canvas Corp stretched canvas
Decor&DIY paint – crystal, Cerulean and  ebony
Tattered Angels Baseboard mist – cardboard
joint compound
alpha letters

Tools:
spatula
paint brush

First, spread a layer of joint compound all over the canvas; take your spatula and make smears that look like wood grain. Make sure you leave it to dry over night!

Now let’s paint it white using the yummy DECOR&DIY paint crystal. Once dry, paint black using the ‘dry brush’ technique – focus on the tops of the ridges so that they stand out. Do the same with blue paint; apply it randomly to add texture and depth. Keep adding the 2 pints in layers until you achieve the desired effect – remember to use the ‘dry brush’ technique; it makes it easier to control the amount of paint you’re adding to the project.

I cut a huge heart from a sheet of canvas to use as a stencil. First, cut a heart out then lay it onto finished wood grain and dry brush tap around the edges of the heart. I didn’t want it to look like the heart was drawn onto canvas so I went over the outline a couple times tapping with my paint brush until I got the distressed look I wanted …

Paint the whole canvas using TA Baseboard mist in Cardboard – this is your final layer of colour. To finish, add your alphas in the centre of the stencilled heart. Your altered canvas project is ready to display!

You can adapt the stencilled design as well as the wording to suit any occasion – birthdays, anniversaries or… anything you can think of. There are no limits in what you can design using this fun technique.

Enjoy your crafty time!!!
