Make your own canvas banner

As you would expect, at Canvas Corp we have plenty of various canvas based products – from pillows through totes to aprons. As if this wasn’t enough, we also stock a variety of canvas and burlap shapes: circles, flags, rectangles and more… Amongst these, hides a selection of banners: plain and printed, burlap and canvas, big and small. So many options to choose from…

Today, our Crew member, Kimberly shares with us two very different takes at making a banner using our Canvas Corp plain canvas shapes. with some help from Tattered Angels she creating some stunning art.

‘Hello, I’m here today to share with you two of my banners. For the first one, I distressed the canvas banners to make them look vintage and used some printed fabric that I colored with Tattered Angels Glimmer Glazes. I’m so excited to share how fun and easy to make this banner! I hope you enjoy it!’ – said Kimberly.

Materials used:

Kimberly shares with us how she achieved the distressed look of the banners:

First, soak your banners in water and squeeze off the excess. Use Tattered Angels Baseboard Mist – I used Cardboard, my most favorite color – to make items look old or vintage; spray randomly as it will fade into the wet fabric… let dry. Now, take your DIY Tattered Angels paints – I used Tan – and dab randomly on the banners, then use a brush to splatter the paint over the banners…again, allow time to dry.
Let’s move on to the printed canvas sheet – use Glimmer Glazes to color the images you’rr planning to add to your banner. Let them dry, then cut them out.
Now, you’re going to add your cut-outs to the banners using fabric glue. You can add some colored burlap, like I did to areas and fussy cut words. Remember to have fun! There is no right and wrong to do these mixed media banners.

What an effective way to welcome Spring! you could hang the banner in your kitchen or on the mantelpiece. You could even hang it on the outside windowsill to show it off to your neighbours and passers by… why not?

Kimberly’s second banner is rich in textures for your eyes to feed on. This beauty would look amazing as a decor on your front door.

‘My second banner is made using a variety of layers and embellishments. It has a great depth and loads of texture! I called it “Live Every Day!”. I hope you will have a go at making your own vintage banner – it’s so much fun!’ – exclaims Kimberly.

This is Kimberly’s process:

Using Dove DIY paint, stencil a doily design all over the banner – this is your first layer of colour and design. Allow it to air-dry.

In an empty spray bottle dilute some Cardboard colour Tattered Angels mist and spray the banners to create the second layer of colour.

Stencil the doily again, this time using a lighter colour of TA DIY paint to create layers of colour and design.

Embellish the banner with garland and lace. Use a hole puncher to attach the sticks – on top of the banner, you will need to find the centre of its width, fold it out about a half inch then punch a hole. Thread rope through the hole then tie to the sticks , I wrapped it around a couple of times so it was permanent. Keep building layers with various embellishments until you are happy with the result.

We absolutely love the depth the layers and textures have created. Isn’t it a worthy home decoration piece?
