More ideas on tags – girl power vs travelling soul

Tags… who doesn’t like them. They are small enough to be able to quickly put one together but still big enough to send a message or make them a valuable gift for someone special. There are many ways which to decorate them; you can do traditional layers of paper embellishments, you can use calligraphy and pens or you can do mixed media – whichever is your style, tags will take it and pull it off.

Today we’d like to share with you two of our Crew members and their very different tags.

First up is Betsy with her Girl Power tag:

‘I am Betsy Skagen of Paper Calliope. My daughter is 16, going on 17 (just like the song says).  Yet thankfully, girls are far more empowered than 1965 America when the Sound of Music movie debuted. Today’s girls stand up for what they think is right, whether it is about equality between genders, fair treatment of the disadvantaged or eliminating hamburger surprise in the school cafeteria.
My daughter loves, and has always loved, all things pink. She is beautiful, funny and obstinate as… well, as obstinate as me. She definitely stands up for what she wants. The difference between us is that it took me decades to find my voice. I think it is inspiring to watch her and other teen girls of today speak out on whatever issues that matter to them. I adore spending time with my daughter and one of the things I like most is crafting with her. One recent Saturday afternoon, we made tags and spent time talking about recent events. She inspired me to create this tag.’ – explains Betsy.

If you want to make this, or a similar tag, begin by cutting a tag shape from Black & Ivory French Script paper and punch a hole in the top. Apply crackle paste over a stencil and let dry for several hours. You can speed up the process with a heat gun, but your cracks may not be as noticeable.

While the crackle paste is drying, press paper clay into an ornamental mold. I had actually prepared lots of these at an earlier time to have on hand, so I don’t have any pictures of this process. When dry, remove from mold and paint with Glimmer Glaze Pewter.
Spray your tag with Vintage Pink Glimmer Mist and dry. Ink the edges of your tag with brown ink.
While this dries, cut a rectangle from Pink & Ivory Mini Dot Reverse paper and ink the edges with brown ink. Print “Fight Like a Girl” (or any message of your choice) onto vellum paper and cut out. Adhere the vellum to the Pink & Ivory Mini Dot Reverse paper with small brads.

Next, crop the race car picture and ink the edges with brown ink. Open and trim a 7gypsies ATC printed file folder into a rectangle shape and adhere both it the picture and the Fight Like a Girl element onto the open file folder.

Glue the entire file folder element onto your tag. Tie ivory cording around the bottom of the tag. Adhere the ornament you made and a pink flower. Finally, loop ivory rick-rack through the top of the tag.

It’s quite a girly yet sending a powerful message tag.

Our second ‘tag lady’ today is Linda Simpson with her Traveller Tag.

‘I  love travelling and exploring new countries. My love of the USA is resonant in my tag. I am looking forward to visiting USA again in the summer. Just to spice things up, I decided to create a tag incorporating different techniques and layering lots of textures using an array of different products. The video takes you step by step through the different layers whilst not adding a lot of depth to the tag by using tissue paper, gel medium with glimmer mists and lovely pooling of the glimmer mists in the texture that the tissue paper created.’ – explains Linda.

This tag would be ideal to add to a scrapbook, which allows for journaling on the back to write memories of any journey taken.

As you can see, the ideas and takes on tags are unlimited and we will keep sharing inspiration with you so keep you eyes peeled. In the meantime, share with us what you have created in our Collective on Facebook.
