Spring Banner with Old Book Covers with TCW – Tattered Angels – Canvas Corp

We continue our journey exploring what fun happens when you match up great brands such as The Crafter’s Workshop, Tattered Angels and Canvas Corp.  Crew Member, Ann Tatum of DuctTapeandDenim.com shares with us a wonderful Spring Banner that is perfect for the mantel, banister or blended with your Spring and Easter decor.  Ann explores working with different surfaces such as burlap, canvas and paper to see how each one reacts with the mixed media goodies and stencils from TCW and here is what Ann created.

“I was thrilled to be a part of this matchup. Mainly because this is a little outside my comfort zone.
But one of my goals this year is to try new techniques and do lots of experimenting!

I started by just playing with everything you sent in the box and then settled on using the fabrics, one scrapbook paper,
Glimmer Mists, Shimmering Gold Gesso, and stencils to create a spring garden garland.

I kept it pretty easy. My readers are always telling me they want simple and quick projects.
This one went together in no time at all.”

Before I decided what to make for this matchup, I had to pull everything out and play. This is not my usual craft project so I had lots of fun experimenting with everything to see how they all worked together. I don’t remember ever using gesso, so I started there. I painted strips of the TCW Clear, Gold, and Black Gesso on the top two pieces of paper. Then I sprayed them with the Glimmer Mist paints, using the TCW 6 x 6 Woven stencil on one of them. I used the same stencil on the bottom left paper, but I applied the Light and Fluffy Modeling Paste through it. That stuff is fun! Then I sprayed it again with the Glimmer Mist paints. The bottom right paper started with a coat of clear gesso. Then I sprayed Glimmer Mist paints, let them dry, and applied the Shimmering Gold Gesso through the TCW 6 x 6 Butterflight stencil. I was quickly learning that I LOVE that gold gesso.

From there I moved on to the CCB Mini White Paper Bags, using both the TCW Gold Gesso and Light and Fluffy Modeling Paste through TCW Moroccan Tiles and 6 x 6 Sweet Posey.  These little bags are great for gift cards, presenting business cards, adding to journals to store appointments and other business cards.

I even pulled out some old flower embellishments that I’ve probably had for 10 years! I hadn’t used them because I didn’t like the colors. The black and gold gesso covered the old colors completely. I sprayed the small black flower with coral Glimmer Mist, too. These didn’t look very “spring-y” to me so I decided to save them for some Halloween projects and moved on to the fabrics.

When I hit the Canvas Corp fabrics, I knew I had found what I wanted to use in my spring project! The TCW Clear Gesso worked great on these, giving me a sturdier surface to stencil on. I sprayed both the Canvas Corp Canvas and Burlap with Glimmer Mists then stenciled the TCW Gold Gesso over it through the TCW Sunflower stencil.

Then I found the 12×12 Paper from Canvas Corp = Watering Can: Seed Packet on Ivory paper and cut the packets apart. I sprayed the Glimmer Mist paints on a piece of wax paper and used them like watercolor paints.  You can use a brush and watercolor in the art or color it completely with Glimmer Mist Paints.

Thinking of You

I found some vintage book covers I had been saving and glued the layers together. I drilled a hole for the cord to go through and tied knots.

I stenciled directly on the second book cover with TCW Gold Gesso using the TCW Sunflower stencil.

Using the front and back of old books is a great way to repurpose them, bring old and new together and to add a nice strong surface to craft on.

I used all the other seed packets and samples of burlap and canvas to make a garden garland by fastening them with mini clothespins to jute.

Love this Spring banner! The TCW products looked fun to try — especially the fluffy modeling paste! Using old book covers is a neat idea — I love the way you used them to show off the burlap and seed packet images!
