Sugar&Spice and Everything Nice – Mini Album

There’s nothing sweeter than a precious newborn baby. Girl or boy they both grab at your heartstrings and make you feel the world’s not such a bad place after all.

Today, Patti Senter has worked with the girl version of the Canvas Corp Home Basics Mix & Match Pad – Sugar & Spice. If you’ve a little fellow new to your life there’s a corresponding Mix & Match Pad perfect for him called Snips & Snails. Patti has added dainty bits of lace and ribbons to this Pink Stitched Canvas book to create sweetness perfect for any little girl.

Let’s take a look as she walks us through her mini album.baby girls mini album canvas corp sugar and spice mix and match pad

When I saw the Tattered Angels Mixed Media page called New Arrival, I knew it had to be the focal point of my mini. How could you not adore this baby in the bassinet?  Using Glimmer Mists in Suede for the hair and Valentine Pink for the sweater I added just a touch to make the image pop.  I love working with this Mixed Media paper, it’s a cross between paper and fabric and just has a fantastic feel to it.  I wanted my fussy cut baby to pop off the page so I cut some mini packing bubbles and squished them under the edges before gluing in place with Beacon’s Fabri Tac.  I know everyone that picks up the mini is going to instantly want to feel the baby, it will create a great focal point.

It takes but just a small amount of the mists to color your images.  I often sprinkle a few drops onto my mat, spritz with a little water and using a paintbrush fill in the images with color.  You can see I added some to the word mat as well.

I’m a notorious fussy cutter, I love looking at the pages and seeing what I can snip out here and there to create my own images. You’ll see this mini is loaded with fussy cut images and strips on each and every page. Just take your time when cutting, and remember to move the paper not the scissors when going around the images and you’ll find it’s a pretty addictive process as well. After coloring the baby and mat from the Mixed Media paper, I fussy cut them both and continued on with pieces from the printed canvas and cardstock (both of which are included in the Mix & Match Pad).

It’s always a great time to raid your crafty cupboards when you create a mini. Pulling out bits of lace and ribbon and bling to see what will fit where. I always like to have the two pages cohesive and follow the same general paper theme on both right and left side. I decided when I started this mini I also wanted a ribbon, thread, or some such accent on each page next to the 3 rings.  Just a small amount of lace with ribbon intertwined, like I’ve shown here, instantly sets the stage for sweet baby feelings. baby girls mini album canvas corp sugar and spice mix and match padAnother hint is when attaching lace or ribbon, it’s easy to adhere them with double sided tape. Glue or tape the lace in place, add a strip of double sided tape over the top where you want the ribbon to be and then press (burnish well) the ribbon in place. You can also add the tape to the back of the ribbon and peel and press that way. I also added a glitter accent on two of the pages. The lace strip I used had fine holes which allowed the stickiness of the tape to be present once the lace was placed down. I sprinkled a very fine glitter over the top of the lace, covered it with a piece of paper and using a bone folder really burnished the glitter into the lace openings sticking it to the tape. Shaking the excess glitter away I was left with a subtle glittering effect. You’ll have to give it a try.baby girls mini album canvas corp sugar and spice mix and match padThe last little tip I’d like to share before I show you some of the finished pages is using a glitter pen and some ink to accent parts of your images.  Here, I used a clear Wink of Stella pen with some ink to paint part of the baby shoes a light pink, it’s a subtle effect that will draw the eye instantly to it.  I also like using corner punches to add some umph to my mats.  I found stuffed back in my crafty drawer this old pink ink which was the perfect soft subtle shade to ink the edges of lots of my mats.  It’s amazing how something so simple as inking edges can make your mini pop.

So now, on to the good stuff! Let’s take a look at a few of the finished pages.  I used the Canvas Corp Basics Canvas Pink Stitched 3 ring Binder for my mini.  It’s 7 1/2″ square with ten 6″ square cream colored pages pre-punched with holes to fit the rings. I rarely use a ring binder for my minis but I was really happy with how this one turned out, especially the look of the canvas cover.  On the video I’ll go through each page, with lots of ideas on the hows and whys of  the page creation.  I hope you’ll join me there, the link is at the bottom of the post.

Lots of pockets and mats…

Using dies creates shapes for the mats with room for photos front and back.  See how sweet the lace with threaded ribbon looks here.

…and here you can see where the punched corners come into play…

it creates a great pop of color along with the softer pinks.

Adding small elements like the mini clothes pins, the button or the flatback pearls just helps the pages come to life.  There are so many hidden features that you’ll see on the video! Lots of ideas to give you inspiration and urge you to create your own little girl or boy mini.  Starting with these Mixed Media pads gives you a great head start to your creative side.
