Summertime is here with the Marine-inspired canvas

Making canvas projects more personal is easy – all you need to do is add a photo or element that brings memories to mind. And how about using some special phrases? You could even go for a walk on the beach and use whatever you find as embellishments! Isn’t that a great idea?

Kate Dachovska, our Crew member, created a beautiful, delicate, maritime-inspired canvas and she shares with us the process she followed.

I am so looking forward to summer in full swing. We do not have any sea here in Czech Republic but maritime-inspired crafts are a favourite. I decided to make canvas for my working room to spread the summer mood. I would like to share with you how to make it step by step. It is really easy. – says Kate.

Materials used:
7gypsies Maritime – paper pad and ephemera
Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists – Woven Burlap, Electric Blue
Canvas Corp – natural burlap
Finnabair – Heavy gesso, Matte gel, Modeling paste
deco stones (florist’s shop), archival ink, different stamps, Nuvo paste, stencils, wooden steer
heat tool, glue gun, brushes

Cover canvas with white gesso – to prepare it for all the colours.

Choose any of your favourite stencils and use it with modeling paste to add structure to the background. Use a heat tool when you need to speed up drying something.

Cut different papers into stripes and with matte gel glue them to the centre of the canvas.

Apply another modeling paste and add a light layer of white gesso over the prepared papers.

Glue strips of canvas and some paper ephemera and add a light layer of gesso. Work mainly in the centre of the canvas. Gesso is a great medium – it helps to blend everything together into one nice design.

With Archival Ink (or any other waterproof ink) and with any stamps you like decorate the prepared paper cluster plus stamp lightly around it – it’s about building an irregular background.

The final step is to add various deco stones. I got mine from a florist’s shop – nothing fancy but great for mixed media backgroud.

Again, cover everything very lightly with gesso and add colour with Glimmer Mists.

If you do not want to have bright colours on your project, again use gesso to fade them down.

There should be some white space around the main image; the whole canvas looks better that way.

What a delicate, summer-inspired canvas; you can change colours and make them as vivid as you like.
