Tammy Brackett – Crew Interview

It’s time for another post in our 2017 Canvas Corp Crew Interviews. We are extremely privileged to be able to work with a group of over a 100 of amazing designers from around the world. They have all come together to create, share ideas, support each other, let us know what we can do better and remind us of what we are doing well.  Our Crew members contribute projects to our blog, design with our products on their blogs, create models for our trade shows, packaging and other fun little projects.  We love to hear what they have to say, to be inspired by their work and to learn new things everyday.
Today, we get to know Tammy Brackett.

Where do you reside?

I live in Richmond Virginia on historic Marion Hill. According to historic markers, Marion Hill is the former outpost of Chief Powhatan of the Powhatan Indian Tribe. I live on the hill where Powhatan’s daughter, Pocahontas, played as a child.
One mile south of me is the marker that notes the Surrender of Richmond during the Civil War and one mile north is where the Union entered Richmond. I’m two blocks from The Clark Palmore house, a historic property dating from 1819.

Describe your design style…

My design style is eclectic. I believe creating should be a flow and I’m never worried about doing anything the “proper” way. I am a frugalista and recycle boxes, packaging, and other trash into art elements and art pieces. I love bohemian/gypsy design. I also love simple elegance.

Who or what do you give credit to inspiring your creativity?
My uncle was a remarkable artist. I used to sit by his side as he drew and I fell in love with the way his pencil moved across a blank page to create people and objects. I grew up to be a musician, not an artist. But over the past seven years, I’ve rediscovered my passion for art.
I was introduced to recycled art projects by Jennibellie, who remains my main art teacher, mentor and tutor! I also dig Shannon Green, Toni Burt, Tamara LaPorte and Teesha Moore.

What inspires you most today?

I’m inspired by recycled art. I believe that we create too much trash. I love making things from trash and keeping stuff OUT of the landfill.

What is your favorite Canvas Corp Brand Product? and why? Just one please!!!!
I am in love with Architextures. I have difficulty with focal images and Architextures is INSTANT focal imagery. I love the way it looks, the way it feels and its ease of use.
We asked Tammy to share with us her favourite project she made using CCB products.

Why is it your favorite?
I made this flowish journal from SCRAPS from a junque packs and it is one of my favorite things!
Do you teach and if so tell us a bit about what you teach, where you go and some of your favorite places?

I taught third grade for 7 years and then ESL for 3 but that was a long time ago. I also did a few workshops with a kids cancer organization here in Richmond. I would love to do more teaching.

I am the happiest doing…

…any kind of art. Beading, painting, making books from cereal boxes, mixed media, collage. Anything artsy makes me happy.

My favorite place to be creative…
My SunRoom Studio.
Tell us one cool detail about your studio or craft space…
It’s a sun room. Natural light…..gotta love natural light!

Tell us one thing fun about you we might not know…

I managed a children’s marionette theatre for years and I was a marionette puppeteer.

Share with us anything about your creative life that you feel would inspire others…

Don’t wait to “learn” how to do something, just do it. Don’t wait to purchase exactly what you need to create with, just use what you have. Technique is NOT as important as just DOING something. It doesn’t even matter how it looks in the end. The process is more important than how something ends up. Creativity is based on spirit- inspiration means being IN SPIRIT with your inner self. Pick up a brush or pencil or a crayon and HAVE FUN!!!

You can see Tammy’s work on her blogInstagram and Facebook page as well as… here, on our blog!
