Vintage Wings on Wednesday – Free Your Mind

In between Christmas and New Year, we’d like to inspire you with a set of slightly distressed, vintage Wings on Wednesday.

I love old, rusty things and bought a few old springs for decor and upcycling. So what better way to both upcycle and make a decor piece than Wings of Wednesday?! Tattered Angels and 7gypsies products are perfect for this project – they provide sparkle, whimsy and that vintage factor. – shares Cathy.

Cut out your wings from cardboard – I did the larger wings in one piece, then cut out 2 smaller ones separately.

I cut out a piece of the printed canvas for my large wings to cover the cardboard and then distressed it with the ink. That process caused the fabric to start fraying for a cool effect.
For the smaller wings, I spritzed them with the various Tattered Angels sprays and pooled a little Lindy’s gold.

For a 3rd set of wings, I made a copy of the paper I wanted to use from the Ondre du Jour collection because I wanted to make my own vellum! Cut out your wings, lay them on wax paper, then brush with olive oil. As the oil soaks in, it makes the paper transparent. Wipe of the oil with paper towels front and back until dry. I’ve laid the wings on a piece of paper so you can see the before (left) and after – you can see through it after!

Now layer your wings: big on the bottom, cardboard, then homemade vellum. Tack down the cardboard and paper wings in the middle where they meet once you have them positioned how you want them. When dry, take your twine and wrap multiple times around the middle of all the layers and tie off in the back.

For the block, I spritzed with Coffee Shop and let it pool, then heat set.
I then made vellum out of a copy of the pic I wanted to use. You can see the paint pattern underneath.

For the hanging piece, a cut an odd-shaped piece of cardboard and a piece from the Ordre du Jour collection. I grunged my gears with Mercury Glass and Sangria and layered them on the cardboard.
With the extra glue that smooshed out, I sprinkled the chunky embossing powder on it for extra texture and didn’t heat set it for a neat effect. I also added a pen nib and used the steampunk chain to hang it.

I colored the wing chipboard in the same manner as the gears. Then I lightly tapped matte gel on different areas with my finger and sprinkled the chunky powder over it but didn’t heat set again to keep the texture.
I also added a pen nib on each wing.

After tying wings onto the spring with more twine, I added finishing touches: a nib to the block, outlining the face with pencil and outlining the words on the hanging piece.

It sounds like a lot of work but it’s easy to do once you’ve got a vision in your head of what you want! Just for it and… enjoy the process!!!
