Weathered Copper Easter Egg

Easter is just around the corner, and if you’re looking for an Easter decoration that is a little less traditional, here’s a perfect idea for you. The basic ingredients are  an egg, flowers, leaves/foliage and the Tattered Angels Naturally Aged Kit  ‘Weathered Copper’.

‘Wanting to combine the feeling of spring through flowers and a classical yet unexpected touch, the idea to give my egg a weathered copper do-over sprouted in my brain. The concept of soft flowers that have become hardened material really spoke to me,’ says Crew Member Mandy Leever-Koel.

Materials used:

Canvas Corp Tissuestock Damask
Tattered Angels Naturally Aged Paint Kit ‘Weathered Copper’
Tattered Angels High Impact Metallic Paint Copper
Tattered Angels Glimmer Glam ‘Tail Fin’
Tattered Angels Chalkboard Mist ‘Blue Ribbon’

Other materials:
Egg vase – TCW Gel Medium – White Gesso – Paper Flowers – Paper leaves/foliage (Diecut machine and dies) –
Metal Butterfly – Sisal – Feathers – Skeleton Leaves

STEP 1

Find an egg. This one used to be flower pot and was wasting away in our barn. I’m sure thrift stores must have some of them, or the home decor stores, garden centres.

STEP 2

Decorate your egg using shredded Canvas Corp Damask Tissuestock. Adhere with TCW gel medium. Don’t worry about crinkles, they will only add to the weathered effect!

STEP 3

Paint with white gesso to soften the damask pattern. In retrospective, you won’t need much gesso, or the pattern will disappear.

STEP 4

Build a composition using paper flowers, paper leaves and foliage. The flowers can come from your stash, as well as the leaves. For the foliage, I used my Die-cut machine and a Sizzix die.

STEP 5

Let me be honest with you and share my mistakes. I painted my composition with white gesso and then pulled out my Tattered Angels Naturally Aged Paint Kit, only to discover the white gesso somehow repelled the Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist ‘Bronze’. (I could have known, gesso keeps paint mediums from being absorbed too much!)

So instead, I painted all the flowers and leaves with Tattered Angels High Impact Metallic Paint ‘Copper’.

STEP 6

Now was the time to use my Tattered Angels Naturally Aged Paint kit ‘Weathered Copper’. Follow the instructions and you will get a wonderful, realistic looking weathered copper effect!

STEP 7

Paint a white butterfly with Tattered Angels Glimmer Glam ‘Tail Fin’, stroke some Tattered Angels High Impact Metallic Paint ‘Copper’ onto the surface and splatter a little Tattered Angels Chalkboard Mist ‘Blue Ribbon’, carefully washed away a bit. Attach the butterfly to the composition.

STEP 8

Find something to fill your egg with. In this case sisal, feathers and skeleton leaves did the trick. They make the egg look less ‘classical’ somehow. A bit more whimsical.
