Valentine’s Day brings to mind hearts, sparkles, red glitter and LOVE being written everywhere we turn. How about taking an alternative approach and stepping away from all the traditional symbolism? Our Crew member, Ilene McInnes, shows you how to make an amazing reverse canvas project with a little language twist on the usual Valentine sentiment. Canvas Corp Stretched Canvas and Burlap are great bases for mixed media art and you can use the front, the back, the side or turn them sideways, there are no rules. One thing that is really unique about these surfaces is they do not have gesso, they feature either natural canvas or natural burlap, allowing you to leave it natural, add gesso or other mediums to make it your way.
‘What better way to celebrate Valentine’s than by giving your special someone something they can keep? Or even better, something they can have on display for a long time after that!
I love playing with words and thought that using a bee in this project will turn it into a clever little puzzle. Simple, yet meaningful!’ – says Ilene.

How clever is the use of bee-related designs and colours in this project?! It makes the canvas so much more interesting!
Start by covering the back of the canvas with modelling paste making sure to cover the staples.
When partially dry, used the Alaskan Salmon mist from the Bouquet kit as ink to stamp honeycomb design onto the modelling paste.
Stamp and colour 7Gypsies ephemera, using black permanent ink as well as Alaskan Salmon mist.
With a brush, add various mists to the embellishments to give them dimension and texture.
Spray the canvas as with the Gold mist from the Glimmer Mist Metallic kit.
Putt all the embellishments together; use nails as additional embellishment and a piece of raffia cord as a hanger.
As a final touch add mini splatter and matte spray sealer.
