It’s hard to believe that spring is passing quickly and summer is creeping up on us! Soon, we will be celebrating a long weekend in honor of Memorial Day and then Independence Day here in the USA. Great time to start thinking about your patriotic home decor, and Marie Nicole is sharing how she created these lovely little wood blocks in an American theme for her home.

I have had these decorative wood blocks in my home for several years now. A friend of mine and I created them together while we were visiting and so we each have a matching set. We originally created these by taking some scrap wood, cutting it into blocks, and then sanding and painting them. Then, after the paint was dry, we adhered the word, “family” to the blocks by cutting some fun patterned paper with the Cricut and adhering them down with Mod Podge.
I recently took these wood blocks and gave them a face lift by decorating the backside, so that I can flip them to either side, depending on the seasons and holidays that are coming up. I grabbed some of my Canvas Corp products from my stash and began embellishing. For the first block, I adhered some scrap canvas down, then a little patterned paper and a few other embellishments. I also decorated the last block the same way, to make them match.
For the next few blocks, I took some of Canvas Corp’s e-flute cardstock and painted on some stripes using my Chili Peppers Glimmer Mist. Then, over the whole piece of paper I sprayed some Iridescent Gold to give it more shimmer. I also added some ribbon ruffles and my letters that were cut with my Cricut. I cut all the letters out with my Cricut, and sprayed them with a little Vintage Brass Glimmer Mist to make them look just a tad aged.
My other blocks I kept very simple by just adhering some burlap and some simple Jute Cord. I also added my Cricut letters like I did to my other blocks. Since I was adding the word, “freedom” which is one letter more than “family”, I placed the two “E”s together on one block.
This was a really easy little project to do, since I already had the blocks on hand. If you are starting a project like this from scratch, you can have someone cut some blocks for you, or check your local craft store to see what they might have. You might even be able to make something similar using some small canvases! Canvas Corp has a variety of shapes and sizes in their store.
Hopefully this gives you some great ideas and inspiration for your own home decor crafting! These blocks look great in this patriotic theme, but they could easily be changed up into any theme or for any holiday!
