As part of this week’s match up with Petaloo International we played along with their theme Grads and Dads and had a lot of fun. Crew Member Marie Nicole created this special gift for Father’s Day. The Petaloo design team has been busy creating amazing projects with all the goodies Canvas Corp Brands sent their way. Marie Nicole experimented with the DIY flowers in her adorable shadowbox along with the amazing combination of gears, a black and white photo, and distressed flowers.
We can sometimes struggle with what to give Dad on Father’s Day. He either has everything he wants and needs or it’s impossible to find something that doesn’t break the bank! Choosing to spend family time together creating memories will never be a disappointment. Just remember to bring the camera so you can frame those precious moments!
First Flight Shadowbox by Marie Nicole
For Father’s Day this year I decided to frame a photo of our son to give to my husband. This photo is special because my husband is a pilot, and this is the very first flight he took our son on! It was such a fun family day for all of us and definitely one to be remembered.
Supplies Used:
- 7gypsies Solo Tray- Stained
- 7gypsies Travel Pack
- 7gypsies Travel Charms
- Metal Gears by Lollibeads
- Petaloo DIY Paintable Flowers
- Tattered Angels Bronze Glimmer Mist
- Tattered Angels Coconut Shell Glaze
- Tattered Angels Vintage Brass Glimmer Mist
- Canvas Corp Jute Cord
- Tombow Mono Multi Liquid Glue
- Foam Dimensional Adhesive
- Tape Runner Adhesive
- Scissors
- Heat Tool
- Recollections Alphabet Stamps
- Versafine Onyx Black Ink
Our Crew tried out these great DIY flowers from Petaloo and what fun they all had. These white flowers are made from paper, fabric, burlap and other natural materials that are longing to be misted, tinted and distressed.
When misted, the flowers take on a whole new look and blend so well with Marie Nicole’s project.
STEP 1 – I started with my photo and did some aging to it using a little Vintage Brass Glimmer Mist around the edges and dried it with a heat tool. Be careful if you want to do this to your photos because the heat tool will make little cracks in your photo. I liked the look of the cracks on this photo so I went ahead with it! Glimmer Mist is great for distressing papers, photos, fabric and more. You can get an even distressing by misting, you can paint it on, or you can add droplets.
STEP 2 – I placed my photo into the tray, adhering it with a tape runner adhesive, then picked out several pieces of paper and some burlap from the 7gypsies Travel Pack to place in the smaller tray squares. I adhered these with a tape runner adhesive as well. For the far right square I hand-cut a little tag, added some twine and also the airplane charm.
STEP 3 – My next step was to start adding my flowers and embellishments. I took Petaloo’s DIY Paintable Flowers and misted them with some Bronze Glimmer Mist and also painted some Coconut Glaze on the centers. After speeding up the drying process with my heat tool, I arranged them around the frame of the tray, adhering them down with Tombow’s Mono Multi Liquid Glue. I also tucked in some tickets from the 7gypsies Travel Pack.
To get more metal elements into this project, I added some gears, a metal key, and another 7 Gypsies charm that says “journey”.
STEP 4- The very last thing I did was to stamp the title “First Flight” on a piece of kraft cardstock and adhered it to the bottom of the photo using some foam adhesive for dimension.
We now have this photo tray displayed on our wall next to a few of our other meaningful family photos. It was such a fun day and some memories we’ll always treasure! I also managed to put together a process video for this shadowbox. I hope you’ll watch and enjoy!
So, if you find yourself trying to come up with a meaningful gift for Dad, use those memories you already have and preserve them in a way that you can display in your home for years to come! As part of the week, Petaloo has been featuring an amazing group of projects. Here is just one of the great ideas. Jump over and see the rest on the Petaloo Blog.
Watering Can Crate by Ginny Nemchak
Ginny of Polly’s Paper Studio created this sweet paper crate featuring the Canvas Corp Collection – The Watering Can and another 7gypsies creative base – the Mini Vintage Crate.
Fill the crates with atc cards, wallet photos, mini art and special little tags like these yellow beauties created with Petaloo DIY flowers.
Timeless Treasures Burlap Layout by Shona Keehn
Love the natural look of this layout on a burlap backdrop. So easy with Canvas Corp 12×12 burlap sheets. The Petaloo flowers were tinted to match the tinted photos, what a terrific look. To see more great projects like these jump over to the Petaloo Blog. There are fun prizes to win, check out the details.
