Our Canvas Corp Home Decor Designer, Angela Harkness is back with the third and last set of projects for her Garden Party. This time, she has for you a set of three cushion covers.
The Garden Party projects are all designed to work together to decorate the garden for a special occasion or a traditional English Afternoon Tea. The projects have been made specifically for my own garden, but obviously you can adapt for your own set-up. The quick and easy pillows will bring a touch of shabby-chic to your garden swing or bench.
Garden party – Square Pillow
You will need:
Canvas Corp Burlap pillow – square
Canvas Corp Burlap flower – avocado
Buttons
Sewing machine
Button foot for sewing machine
Flower template
Frixion pen
Draw a flower shape centrally on the pillow front. If not very confident, use a template or a shape downloaded off the internet.
Choose a selection of buttons of various shades of avocado and lime green and position around the flower outline.
Sew the buttons onto the pillow front using the flower outline as a guide for placement.
To get all of the buttons sewn on quickly, use a button foot on your sewing machine.
Position the avocado burlap flower in the centre of the flower shape and sew in place. Sew on a final button in the centre of the flower.
Fill the pillow with a cushion pad and then it’s ready for use.
garden party – Round Pillow
For the round pillow, Angela used:
Canvas Corp Burlap pillow – round
Embroidery thread
Floral fabric
Tulle fabric
Buttons
Prym Trick marker pen
Embroidery hoop and needle
Circle template or jars to draw around
Scissors
Needle and thread
Buttons
Use a disappearing ink fabric pen and write the slogan ‘The Earth laughs in flowers’ on the pillow front.
Embroider over the letter outlines using your preferred embroidery stitch. I used the chain stitch.
An embroidery hoop will help with the tension of the fabric and stitching.
Draw around a circle template or use jam jars of two differnt sizes. Cut out 3.5″ fabric circles from the floral fabric and 5″ circles from the cream tulle fabric. This was taken from the child’s dress and underskirt.
Use strong thread and sewing needle to sew a running stitch around the edge of the circle of fabric.
Once stitched completely around the circel, pull the thread to gather the fabric in on itself.
Secure the centre with a couple of back stitches. This is a simple ‘Suffolk Puff’ or ‘Yo-yo’.
Repeat the running stitch and gathering technique with a double layer of the tulle fabric.
Sew the floral yo-yo centrally on top of the tulle yo-yo.
Sew a coordinating button in the centre. Make another 5 yo-yos as described.
Position the yo-yo flowers around the embroidery then sew in place. Fill the pillow with a cushion pad and then it’s ready to use.
garden party – Rectangle Pillow
For the rectangular cushion, you will need:
Canvas Corp Burlap pillow – rectangle
Canvas Corp Burlap flower – natural burlap
7 gypsies lace trimmings
Floral fabric (child’s dress)
Ribbon
Button
Sewing Machine
Rotary cutter and ruler
Unpick the seams in the girls dress to give you the large piece of ‘skirt’ fabric. Use rotary cutter and ruler to cut fabric in to 8″ x 12″.
Or you could just get a piece of fabric and cut it to size 🙂
Cut a piece of ribbon and lace approx. 12″ in length.
Unpick the burlap pillow seams then sew the floral fabric piece onto the top of the burlap pillow front.
Sew the lace piece below the floral fabric piece.
Sew the ribon centrally over the floral fabric and lace piece to cover the ‘joint’.
Position the natural burlap flower in line with the ribbon then sew in place. Add a button to the centre.
Reassemble the front and back pillow pieces. Insert a cushion pad then the pillow is ready to use.
