Let Freedom Ring Artboard – Flags of the World Challenge

Today Crew Member Tracy Dickson share share a project inspired by the American flag. Tracy tell us: The July Challenge was to use your own country’s flag as inspiration. Americans decorate with the flag theme for several holidays every year, including the 4th of July (Independence Day), so I decided to make a décor piece for our hall table. The Architextures Artboard is a sturdy substrate to use for this kind of project.
To create a similar project as Tracy you need these products from Canvas Corp Brands:

7Gypsies Architextures™ Artboards – 6″x6″
7gypsies Mixed Media Junque Pack
Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist – Lobster
Tattered Angels Chalkboard Mist – Splash
Tattered Angels Chalkboard  Mist – Teal High Heel
Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist – Dazzling Diamond

S

Step 1

Cut a length of paper cord and spritz with water to soften it. Cut it into lengths a little longer than the width of the Architextures Artboard. Using a paintbrush, apply Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist – Lobster to both edges of each piece. Drying with a heat gun will cause the paper to crinkle back up to a nice texture.

Step 2

Fold each piece of paper in half and adhere to the Artboard using glue, then trim the ends on one side.

Step 3

Cut a rectangle of canvas and pull some threads from each edge to give it a softer look. Spray the front side with Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist – Patina and Tattered Angels Chalkboard Mists – Splash. A spray of water can help with blending the colors. At this point I thought the color was too light, so I dried the canvas a bit by pressing between some sheets of paper then with my heat gun. I then sprayed the back side of the canvas with Tattered Angels Chalkboard Mist – Cornflower Daze and Glimmer Mist – Riptide. (Substitute Water and Teal High Heel) This gave me the brighter color I was looking for. Allow the canvas to dry completely.

Step 4

After counting out 50 wood veneer stars, spray with Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist – Dazzling Diamonds. Dry with a heat gun then mist and dry them a second time. Adhere the stars to the blue canvas in a random arrangement.

Step 5

Stamp the phrase “Let Freedom Ring” on a strip of paper colored with Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist – Lobster. Apply Distress Ink – Black Soot to the edges.

Step 6

Color another piece of paper cord with blue mists. After drying, adhere it to a strip of cardstock. Attach a strip of white paper to the front, then the red phrase pieces on top of the white.

Step 7

Cut a piece of textured cardstock large enough to fit behind the blue canvas and the word strip. Mist it with Dazzling Diamonds and dry. Apply Distress Ink – Broken China to the edges.

Step 8

Cut a piece of lace and glue to the edge of the textured cardstock. Glue a piece of cardstock to the back of the canvas. Attach the blue canvas and word strip to the textured cardstock, then attach the grouping to the Artboard. To ensure a good bond, place an acrylic block and something heavy on top while the piece dries.

And the finished project looks like this:
