Pop Art colors are all the rage these days especially bringing back that 1980’s splattered paint and ink vibe. The difference today is we have a lot more art supplies at our disposal giving that 1980’s look a modern twist. Bold colors, mixed palettes, stripes and circles, it all works together today.
With the surge in mixed media painting and planners, bringing this cool ink vibe to accessories is easy to do, just look at what CCB Crew Member Donna of Memes Art Place did. She used our new Tattered Angels Origins Mixed Media Paper instead of fabric to create this fun pop art style pencil case. All you need are a few simple supplies to make your own. Let’s follow along with Donna and see how she made it!
The new mixed media Origins paper is so sturdy I thought I would try to make something usable out of it. Everyone is so into journaling and planners that I thought a pencil case would be a good place to start. Now they can bring supplies with them made with paper they made.
Please Note: You could also use Tattered Angels DIY and Decor Paints, Inks or Mists!
Tools Used
- Paper Trimmer
- Sewing Machine
- Tape Runner
- Paint Brush
The paper is two sided so you can choose the side to work on. If you don’t care of the art icon, no worries, just paint over them. The papers are all black and white, so you can turn them into any color palette you choose.
Step 1 – After painting your Origins paper (or misting) Cut into 3 pieces. 8 1/2″ X 5 1/2″, 8 1/2″ X 4 1/2″, and 8 1/2″ X 1″
If you are not that comfortable with a sewing machine this is a great project to test you skills. Try on a few scrap pieces before you work on your project. Stitching paper is similar to fabric, just make sure the stitches are not too close together or it can tear the paper.
Step 2 – Take the 8 1/2″ X 1″ piece and the 8 1/2″ X 4 1/2″ piece and sew zipper between the two pieces. (optional…use a tape runner to hold pieces in place)
Since the paper is two-sided, you will have decor on the inside too.
Step 3 – Take the 8 1/2″ X 5 1/2″ and sew it to the front piece. While going over the zipper area, I stitched it a few times to reinforce the zipper.
Step 4 – Cut zipper off on both sides
Step 5 – You can be done at this point. But I wanted to finish it with bias tape. Stitch bias tape all around.
Step 6 – This step was a option also. I wanted to add a hook to be able to carry with my drawing pad. Just cut a thin piece of the Origins paper and sew it in half. Put it though the hole in the hole and sew it to your case.
Step 7 – Done-Add Pencils, markers or even a small watercolor set with brushes
The Tattered Angels Mixed Media Origins Papers come in 12 different styles and are all two-sided, giving you many options to choose from and many different styles that we are sure you will find just the right one. Color them in detail or color them as a background with your favorite marker, pencil, glimmer mist, paint, etc. Adult Coloring Your Way!!
Happy Creating!
