A Layout Called “9”

One of our favorite things about having three brands under one roof is how well they work together. We are constantly in awe of what incredible, creative things come from our designers’ minds using products from the trio. Here, Mandy Zimmerman walks us through how to make this beautiful grunge-themed layout using the 7Gypsies American Vintage Collection, Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist, Baseboard and High Impact paints and Canvas Corp products – We love this layout!

Hi friends, Mandy here sharing a grungy boy page featuring 7Gypsies, Tattered Angels and Canvas Corp goodies! I used a photo taken of my son from last year. My son and I were taking a nature hike and I was able to get some great pics of him sitting in some tall grass. I created a “sepia” effect on the photo and I thought the papers and textures blended well with the colors in the photo.

Materials:

Tools: Paper Cutter, Heat Embossing Gun, Clear Fine Embossing Powder, Fine Ink Pen, Sewing Machine, Scissors, Paint Brush, Toothbrush, Hot Glue Gun, Fabric Glue

I had much fun creating this page, especially the background work! I created the cool background using the Harlequin stamp with various Tattered Angels paints and mists! I’m always trying something new so I wasn’t really sure how this background was going to turn out but I ended up liking it….. When I was finished the background work I though I might take my design in a vertical direction but it wasn’t working with the photo I had on hand. I started playing with the textures in a horizontal direction and this is what I came up with!

Step 1: I started by adding “resist” stamp work using the Harlequin Stamp. I used a “fine” clear embossing powder for this background effect..

Step 2: When the background was embossed I went over the areas with Tattered Angels paints and mists. I diluted the white High Impact paint by misting it with Pearl Glimmer Mist. I then sprayed some Bittersweet Baseboard paint and moved it around with the end of a paintbrush.

Step 3: I really wanted to “marble” the paint so I added more and more and used a heat gun to move the paint around.

Step 4: Once the paint dried, I started setting up my design. I wanted to add some messy stitchwork to various paper pieces and textures because I was doing a grungy boy page.

Step 5: This photo shows the direction I was taking this design. I almost added some vertical details but decided to keep everything horizontal.

Step 6: I went over various areas dipping my finger in the White High Impact Paint and dabbing. When the design was set up and finished I covered the photo with a piece of paper and covered a toothbrush with the paint. I took my thumb and flicked the paint over various areas of the layout.

Mandy, this is just so cool! We love the vintage, grungy, earthy feel that you created here – this is just a masterpiece.

Happy creating!
