Theme parties are all the rage and we could not get enough of the great photos, creative ideas and amazing guest book for this themed birthday party, Dana created. She gives us a peek at the Disney’s Newbies Themed Birthday Party and shares an amazing vintage guest book she created and the guests were happy to sign.
Gifts are great… but handwritten notes are better! We have been LOVING anything and everything handmade and handwritten. We don’t know about you, but we’d rather have a dozen notes written by close friends than a dozen gifts any day!

Friends and family joined together for a Newsies themed party. We set the date a year in advance to make sure people could mark the time on their calendars. Everyone who knew Sandee, (and this is a lot of people) knew about the party, but somehow, when the date arrived, Sandeewas still unsuspecting and completely surprised to find her loved ones had gathered together in her honor.
If you have never heard of it, Newsies is a 1992 Disney Movie based on the New York Newsboy Strike of 1899. It’s also a Broadway play. Sandee is a creative soul who loves musicals and Newsies is her favorite. We kept the party simple, creating seating outside and decorating with kraft paper, newspapers, and oil lamps. A piano was even pushed outside to provide entertainment and lead a sing along. If you have never had a party with showtunes, you are missing out. After hilarious this-is-your-life-in-show-tunes song was shared with Sandee and the guests, we continued to laugh and sing together for hours. This was so fun, and the joy on my friends face is something I will never forget.
I knew when the party was still in it’s planning stages that I wanted to create a guest book. Sandee is a people person and the most important thing to her was not decorations or gifts, but having the ones she loved most share the day with her. I wanted to make a book that would complement the party theme and help her hold the memories of the day close, and something simple enough that it could endure handling from all the guests. After the party I took the book home with me so I could add photos and a few more embellishments.
Along with a great party decor, costumes and fun props, Dana created this vintage birthday party guest book and shared with us how she made it.

I used little paper bags from Canvas Corp and slipped tags inside to create pockets and extra space for guests to write notes. I couldn’t resist a touch of Tattered Angels here and there in the book either. I used the Glimmer mist in Kraft very liberally. The vintage style postcards of the ‘Wish You Were Here’ paper fit in the book perfectly. When I needed more, I was able to pick up some of the papers at the cutest little local shop, el & em. Shop owner Denise, carries a little bit of everything.. She is a woman after my own vintage heart. el & em has an eclectic assortment of old suitcases and upcycled furniture as well discontinued and current scrapbook supplies tucked in every corner of her very little shop. (Most of which would have looked great as decorations for a Newsie Themed party!)
Next time you host a party, you might think of creating your own version of a personalized guest book. Sandee was delighted with hers.
