DIY Painted Chandelier

This was once an old, beaten down, forgotten brass chandelier that nobody wanted is now it is a piece of art worthy of a creative nook, play room or maybe an outdoor birthday party.  Just a simple coat of paint, some paper covers and tinted crystals and it is transformed.

This took just one coat and touch ups in a few places, the paint will adhere to any type of metal.  You will want to make sure your chandelier is clean of any dusk, webs or dirt.  Before painting make sure it is perfectly dry.  Then one coat should about do it or you can add a second layer to deepen the color.  If you chandelier has the plastic white candles you can choose to paint them or leave them as they are.

THE CANDLE COVERS:  For the chandelier covers you can purchase new covers at Lowe’s or a home improvement store, paint or redo current covers or consider making paper ones.  If your chandler is a working chandelier you will want to wrap your paper around chandelier cover bases to ensure they fit over the candles properly and are not too close then it is lit.  If your chandelier is for party decor or fun decoration you may not want to invest in new covers, to  develop a pattern it is helpful to have a cover the right size and you can make your own pattern or you may have to estimate a bit.  You can use that true and tested Compass from school days to make the arches.  Cut each cover from cardstock and glue together, you can hold with clothespins or paper clips until they dry.  Use a fast drying glue like Beacon’s 3 in 1 will hold quickly and will keep the cone in place.

THE CRYSTALS – This chandelier did not originally come with crystals, some do, if yours does then remove them all if you can and wash them and let them completely dry.  If you are adding Crystals – Princesca Hardware from 7gypsies.  You can then dip or paint them with any of the Tattered Angels Stained Glass Paints, this very sheer paint will adhere to glass, plastic, crystal, acrylic and other stick surfaces to add a tint of color, you can dip or paint more than once to add a deeper color.  If you want to paint them a solid color we recommend the Decor & DIY Paint.
