Who hasn’t seen ‘Frozen’? We’re sure that even if you haven’t watched to movie – how is that even possible? – then you must have heard the ‘Let it go’ song. Today, Kerstin has for you a stylishly upcycled doll who, after some alterations, became the Snow Queen. You can use her as a wintery decoration for your living room or let your children play pretend with her and other ‘Frozen’ characters.
‘Do you know Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale called ‘The Snow Queen’? It was one of my favourite stories in my childhood. “Frozen” is the updated Disney adaptation of the story where Elsa and Anna are the main figures. My children love this film and all the characters, even Olaf, the snowman; they all are totally in vogue here. ‘Let it go’ is the song which is sung all day every day, especially when it has snowed. To make the kids happy, I came up with the idea of tinkering up a snow queen. I also wanted to try the Tattered Angles mists together with fabric and stiffener to see what I can achieve.’ – says Kerstin-Inga Peters
Materials used:
Barbie doll
Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist Jack Frost
Tattered Angels Chalkboard Mist Paint Splash
Tattered Angels Chalkboard Mist Paint Blue Ribbon
Tattered Angels High Impact White
Fabric Stiffner DecoArt
Sizzix Thinlits Leaves Dies
White cardstock or texture paper
reindeer moss
medical dressings from an old first medical kit (elastic and gauze)
lace leftovers with pearls
Tools:
Hot glue gun
Use an old Barbie doll as a base – she’s approx. 13 cm tall.
Wrap a piece of elastic gauze bandage (ca. 10 cm) around the body; first, the upper part no more than 2-3 times then the rest of the fabric to make a skirt piece fixed it with a pin.
The other part of the skirt is made of fine gauze (3 stripes 7cm long). For a scarf, another piece of gauze is used; it was inked with fabric stiffener a day before. This is to make sure that they’re completely dry and can be easily attached to the doll using hot glue gun.
Use the glimmer mists to color the fabric; the color spreads very well and the fine gauze will remain stiff.
Use white paint to cover parts of arms, legs, face and hair. White impact paint is highly pigmented and shows good opacity. Let it dry.
Using hot glue gun, add all the little embellishments, such as die cut leaves, leftover lace with pearls, moss a snowflake sticker at the back of the head.
Your personal snow queen with a touch of nature feeling is ready. We are sure that you little ‘Frozen’ fans will love this beautiful wintery character. Now all you need is to make an Olaf to keep her company!
