Maritime Almanac Mini Journal

May starts a brand new series for 7gypsies on the blog where we are featuring our ‘7 Gypsies Favorite Collections’ with new and exciting projects.  We are kicking off the series with Maritime, our vintage take on nautical in it beautiful teals, corals and natural colors of the sea. This collection has been one of gypsies most popular collections, to view the Maritime Collection.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Our first project was created by Monica Edwards and not only does it make our Maritime papers look amazing, the construction of the book is so noteworthy.

Maritime Book Supplies

The book begins with a Canvas Corp White Tabbed Book.  You can use the 7gypsies Naked Tabbed book as well, but the white book allows you to transform it into any color and really have fun with the ink colors. Spray Tattered Angels Chalkboard Decadence onto a sponge dauber, then use to ink the edges of the 5×7 tabbed book.

Monica then covered the distressed pages with various papers from the Maritime Collection.

Sizzix dies work well with canvas.  Using one of the frame dies Monica crated this frame and using Chalkboard Decadence and Navy Blue Glimmer Mist sprays to color the frame.  Canvas loves the mist paints and the colors are very deep and rich.  Add accents of burlap, canvas, ropes and painted fussy cut pieces from the canvas sheet to create each page to your liking.  Fringe the burlap giving it a very vintage feel.

Assorted Sizzix dies were used to create the various pages in the book adding the Maritime Charms and Antique Silver Binding Rings for additional detailing.

For creative detailing, she fussy cut images from the Nautical Canvas Panel and painted the images using neutral Tattered Angels Glimmer Glam and High Impact paints.  Add pieces from the Maritime Ephemera Pack to pages and insert a piece of art into Vintage Brass Optical Lens .Nautical Almanac6

Complete the rest of the pages with assorted papers, ephemera, charms and pieces of burlap, canvas and ropes.  Distress and rough up the pages to make them look like they were found on an old ship.

Binding the Book:

Step 1:  Cut a piece of canvas approximately 6″x12″ leaving the edges rough for this vintage look and mark as shown.

Step 2: Folded the sheet at every mark.

Step 3: Glue in between each of the Tabbed Book Pages on the un-tabbed side.  Keeping the canvas loose but each step even so the book will open.  We recommend a glue like Beacon’s 3 in 1 or Fabritac when adhering fabric and paper together.

Mist the natural cord with the Navy Blue Glimmer Mist and adhere to the front of the book to finish the binding.

Fussy cut the anchor from the Nautical Fabric Panel and color in with the neutral paint to create the detailing and finish with the Nautical Almanac piece wrapped around a simple pearl covered pin and add the star fish charm.  Your book is now ready for photos, journaling from a recent trip to the ocean or a guest book for your beach house.
