We just love seeing the Crew create personalized pieces for their own homes. Whether they use our totes, aprons, stretched canvases, or pillow blanks, we always feel inspired by their creativity! Today, Charity is showing us how she stenciled this fabulous mermaid onto one of our burlap rectangle pillowcases. The outcome is charming, and it looks fabulous on her porch chair! In the summer we live on the porch. I stumble into the kitchen for my first cup of coffee and find a cat or two waiting for the day to begin. As I collect my breakfast they run between me and the door, desperate to get their morning nap started. A new cushion brightens up any space and is enjoyed by the human and feline residents of our home. Given the level of imagination our house runs on, a mermaid is the perfect theme. –Charity
Canvas Corp Burlap Pillow Rectangle 10″x18″
Tattered Angels High Impact Paint: Light Blue
Tattered Angles High Impact Paint: Turquoise
White Cardstock
Wax Paper
Craft Knife
Washi Tape
Paint Brushes
STEP 1
Print or draw a mermaid silhouette on 12″ x 12″ white cardstock. I used Whiteboard Cardstock so I could redraw the lines until I got the angles just right.
Cut out mermaid silhouette with craft knife and tape stencil to Burlap Pillow Rectangle. Cut 9″ x 17″ liner from wax paper. Insert into Pillow Rectangle to prevent paint bleed through.
Use stencil brush, sponge, or any blunt brush to dab Light Blue High Impact Paint onto Pillow Rectangle. Allow paint to dry 20 minutes.
Dab Turquoise High Impact Paint onto burlap. Mix equal parts of both paint colors and dab onto burlap. Allow paint to dry 20 minutes.
Carefully remove stencil so as not to smear any remaining wet paint.
Use flat, stiff brush to dab Turquoise High Impact Paint around mermaid outline. Leave Pillow Rectangle to dry over night.
Remove wax paper liner. Insert 10″ x 18″ pillow form or stuffing. Display Mermaid Pillow with nautical pride.
Such a fun little pillow to display on your porch, in your home, or maybe the beach house? So many great nautical possibilities with this stenciling method! Go ahead and customize not only pillows, but placemats, totes, and other burlap items we have in store!
