Kimberly, one of our handy and crafty crew members, decided to tackle her backyard furniture. Wow, the transformation is dramatic!

Hello it’s Kimberly here today to share my ugly story. My patio furniture has had it, it’s ugly and worn out. I went shopping to replace my cushions and was sad to find out it would have cost me $300.00 to buy replacements. I could have almost bought a brand new set for that price so I quickly ordered canvas from Canvas Corp Brands. I was AMAZED at how fast they shipped it to me! I have never covered furniture, nor really sewn in my life, so I wasn’t sure where to start.

You can decide if you want measure your cushions before or after you rip off the old ones.  I ripped off the yucky covers then I measured my cushions.  Measure each cushion, including the top, bottom, sides and about 1″ on all sides extra to allow for the seams.  You can use the covers you removed to measure or use the foam…you might try both and compare. The more accurate the measurements, the closer you will be to buying the right yardage. I got a little extra just to be sure it all worked out.
Step 1 – Remove the old covers by cutting or making an opening, saving all the insides.  If they are in bad shape, you might have to replace them but save as much of the insides as you can.

Step 2 –  Since I’m a beginner, I wanted to sew as little as possible.  I made sure the fabric was able to fold over so I only needed to sew two sides of the cushions and I used fabric glue on the closures of my cushions.  Note:  I tried to apply sticky back Velcro but it ripped right off…it would have had to be sewn on.

Step 3 – Now slip onto the cushion turned wrong side out and pin the corners.

Step 4 – Next I drew a line where I needed to sew and sew the corner so they don’t look like a pillow case.

Step 5 – Now turn it to the right side and slip onto cushion. I love how it looks like I knew what I was doing. After I slipped cushion inside I folded the edges and glued it shut.

I took a sheet of printed fabric panel and fitted it into my table tray.

I’m amazed how well my cushions turned out! I’m already planning on how to cover my patio table and chair cushions next!
