Rice Resist Art with Tattered Angels Mists

It is amazing when you look out the window and the nature around you inspires you to create art.  Creative Crew Member Kimberly did just that. She looked out her window, saw a beautiful dandelion and wanted to recreate it but how she did it is truly a work of art.  She uses rice as a resist to help create the “fluff” of the flower.

Make a wish… “Some see weeds but I see a beautiful wish about to happen.”  I love, love how beautiful they are…..so I wanted to make one … brain storm… hmm rice + sprays + canvas makes me wonder if I can make a dandelion, so I started experimenting.  Oh I so love the look.  I just had to share how fun and easy it was.  You are going to love how fun this is.  Just imagine all the creations you can add this fun technique to your mixed media art and make sure to save the colored rice for another project such as a mixed media art by gluing it to a piece or laying it onto your canvas or papers and spritz with water and watch the color flow onto your art!
Supplies Used:
Tattered Angels – Decor & DIY Paint – Ivory
Canvas Corp – 12×12 Wooden Frame
Beacon Fabri-Tac glue
Rice (not instant rice)
Lace
Tools Used:
Scissors

Step 1 – First I took a sheet of canvas and cut out a piece then I frayed the edges some by pulling some threads out … Next grab your rice and corn and yummy tattered Angels Glimmer Mists.  Make sure you don’t choose instant rice as it will not work the same way.  Take the rice and drop it into small piles, add a strip of cord then pat rice piles out some so giving a bit of space in-between rice, but not two much.  You are forming them to look like wispy dandelions.

Step 2 – Spray with first color of Glimmer Mist and apply some heat with heat gun to help it try quickly.  Spray a second color in the center to give a dimensional feel.  Spray some other colors around the rice for extra depth of color and contrast.  Pour sprayed rice quickly into a container.  Try to not allow the rice to move during this process.

You are coloring the canvas all around the flowers to form the flower design.  Once dry remove the rice and store it for another project.  image3
Step 3 – Paint the wood frame with the DIY and High Impact paints to make it distressed.   Natural wood and Glimmer Mist work great tougher – you have a natural wood stain in just about any color and you can choose with or without the glimmer.   Placed dried art in frame and color the chipboard letters with paint to make them match the art you have created and glue them into place along with a touch of trim or lace.

Here is another example using rice as the rest but let’s use red and blue for this one.  Fun and simple.
 image7
Step 1 – Add rice and spray with blue mists, allow to dry and pour off rice.  The color you choose gives you a unique feel for the background, pick one or chose a few.

Step 2 – Replace with new rice, add in second color of red.  Spray and remove rice.

This contrast of colors is amazing.  Just think of the possibilities of colors you can do with the endless supply of Tattered Angels mists.

This resist technique is amazing.  Think of what you can do to create a resist with object about your house then lay them down and see what fun shapes are revealed under your sprays!!  You can also try beans, pasta and other small shapes with unique designs and have fun creating.
