She’ll Be Coming Around the Mountains Layout

If you think Scrapbooking is all about big books filled with pages and pages of layouts and photos, you are only partially right, you can do a single layout, frame it and show it off and that is Scrapbooking too.  We think that photos deserve to be showcased and shown off, so we are always looking for new, exciting ways to showcase our favorite photos. For some people the word “layout” can seem a little intimidating, but the cool thing is… It doesn’t have to be complicated! In this blog, we are highlighting a beautiful, but simple layout that our friend Emeline Seet created using some Canvas Corp Printed Cardstock and 7gypsies Papers and Ephemeras.

Layouts generally focus on one photo these days with layers and textures around the photo that bring it to life.  You can make the layout match the photo, your room decor or both.  The fun part about creating a layout is it lets you show off your creative style.

So next time you just want to print a photo and frame it, consider doing a layout and these simple, classy techniques are sure to inspire.

To start, Emeline picked out a photo that she wanted to showcase in this layout. You can choose any photo that you’d like, but we love the way the black & white looks with the patterned and colored papers, ephemera and tags – it really stands out!  Most layouts today focus on one photo, try different ones from the shoot and see what you like best.  If you are intimidated about the photo, do a little google search, there are so many great photography tutorials out there that are sure to help build your confidence.

The next step is choosing a color palette, you can be creative within the color story, but it helps to keep the layout cohesive.  You can choose to match the photo or you can make it neutral to match the room decor.  Then you begin picking out the papers, ephemera, tags, stamps, textures, etc. that you are going to use to convey your layout’s color story, theme & feeling – We love the color scheme and textures that Emeline chose for this postage-themed layout!  You can gather more than you might need and keep playing with them to get the look you are gong for.

One fun trick is to fussy cut pieces from your papers or ephemera to create small touches that are just right for your page, like the art pieces from the Bon Voyage Papers from Canvas Corp.

Some of the papers that we are using today, such as the Paris paper, have a variety of sayings on them allowing you to choose whichever phrases or words you think go well with your layout’s theme – Emeline chose to use the “c’est la vie,” which in English means, “such is life” – How fun!

Once you have put each piece in place you can glue them into place, there are so many options for adhering your papers, embellishments and photos that you need to decide what is right for you.  Tape Runners are great for flat papers, glues such as Beacon’s 3 in 1 are great for textured and dimensional accents and Xyron adhesives let you turn your papers into stickers and make it easy to put them where you want.  Whatever your choice experiment first to see how the adhesive works to make sure that you pieces go and stay where you want them to.

Some layouts follow one collection, we like the idea of pulling from different collections and different brands so that your layout is a one of a kind, so explore what is out there.

From this point on, you have complete creative freedom! All you do is place the papers, tags, cutouts and ephemera on the page in whatever position you like. As long as you glue as you go, you can add as many layers as you want. Emeline used some fun letter-themed stamps and pearls to add flare to her page – Very, very cute!

There you have it! A fun, vintage altered layout that perfectly showcases that image that you love.

Thank you Emeline! This layout is incredibly cute, fun and pretty darn easy – We love it! Remember, don’t be afraid of layouts!
