Spellbinders Partner Road Trip with projects by Canvas Corp Brands

PartnerHopBadge_Final

Welcome to our blog, The Creative Studio where we showcase projects created by our amazing Canvas Corp Brands Creative Crew, introduce new products from our 3 great brands Canvas Corp, Tattered Angels and 7gypsies and feature Partner Match Ups where we get the opportunity try out new products and see how well the products work together.

Today we are excited match up with Spellbinders new Sapphire Machine and new dies in the fun Spellbinders Partner Road Trip Blog Hop.  We are one of 4 great companies featured today, you will find the other brand links at the bottom of the post.  For all the details about this hop visit the Spellbinders Blog.

We were so excited when we received our special package from Spellbinders for the hop!  The first thing the Crew had to do, of course, was try out all of the new Blue Dies, they are so easy to work with and we love that they die cut and emboss paper at the same time and the new affordable Sapphire Die Cutting Machine is just the right size for smaller dies (up to 2¼” wide) and is portable, making it easy to take with you anywhere you creativity goes.    We decided it would be fun to choose one main die set and show it off with two very different looks, one featuring our Tattered Angels Pure Mistable Papers and Glimmer Mist Paints and the other featuring our new 7gypsies Collection American Vintage.  Enjoy the road trip!!!!

Project #1
The Flight of the Butterflies Crate
We love little wallet photos and wanted to come up with a creative way to show them off, so we decided to start with one of the 7gypsies Photo Crates.  This little wooden crate was designed to help organizes and show off 4×6 photos in a fun, creative way.  We slipped in one of Canvas Corp’s 6×6 Stretched Burlap and decorated it with a flutter of butterflies and one of our favorite butterfly photos (taken by Erin Brelsford) to show it off!  We found that when the crate is on its side, the wallet size photos stored in pretty little file folders fit just right.  This little library is prefect for setting on your desk at work, home or in your studio for all to see.

To get started you will need:

Step 1:  We used the Sapphire Die Cutting Machine and the Blue Butterfly Dies to die cut a variety of butterflies in different sizes and shapes from each of the Tattered Angels Misable Papers.  While these papers may all look very similar, they are all very different – each with its own finish, texture and materials. The dies emboss and die cut at the same time, bringing out the textures and the detailing and when they are misted the embossed areas stand out even more.

Step 2:  We misted 3-4 butterflies with each of the Glimmer Mist colors and mixed the butterfly shapes and mistable papers to create a wide range of color, texture and finishes.

IMG_1463

Choose your favorite Tattered Angels Palette of colors, our choices are listed above in what you will need.

You can see how different each of the butterflies looks when misted at the same time. Some of the butterflies are very rich in color, others show off the texture of the paper, while others let the drops of mist shine through.  You can also dab the paint off or add more texture with a paper towel.

Step 3:  Start at the bottom left and weave the wire in and out of the burlap making a frame around the sides and the top of the stretched burlap.  Then, secure the burlap into one of the long slats on the side of the crate, the crate will be positioned facing out and not up.

IMG_1301You can cut and mix as many butterflies as you like – we had a hard time stopping.

IMG_1559

Step 4:  Begin to attach the butterflies randomly all over the wire, folding and bending the wire and the butterflies to create the illusion that they are flying.IMG_1297

IMG_1301Step 5:  Mist each of the Small file folders in random colors and mixtures that match the butterflies with Glimmer Mist.  The more random the better.  If they curl up a bit you can lay something heavy on them and let them die flat.

IMG_1399

You can turn the file folders into mini pocket folders by simply folding the bottom up and making a little pocket like this.  These are perfect for blank misted folders or the printed file folders – you can then make them into a book or slip them into your library as they are.IMG_1527

Step 6:  Next, we die cut our inspirational photo. Using the scallop die cut set (the largest size), we created a perfectly trimmed photo that is ready to be added to our stretched canvas.  We like the simple look of the die cut photo on the canvas – great way to show off a beautiful shot.

IMG_1516

The die cut photo just pops off the canvas and looks like it is suppose to be there.

IMG_1535

Step 7:  Create this tiny photo books that will slip into your crate.  Each one holds a collection of wallet or tiny photos.  You can get these printed at Walmart, Walgreens or on any of the online photo printers.  They are fun to work with and if you are making this for a gift, you can make more than one as the photos come tiny in sets of 4.  The books are made by placing 2-3 file folders inside of each other, making a second small fold to create the small book end and punching two holes into the book end and tie with the waxed cotton cording.  Make a tiny fold next  to the center fold to make the book ends if desired.IMG_1551Fill each book with your mini photos and use the  post cards from the 7gypsies American Vintage Paper Pad to document the photo, tell its story and the date it was taken.  You can make as many as you like and create your own little mini book library.

So, all the parts come together for your Butterfly Photo Library Crate.  Leave it on your desk for all to see.

Onto our next project….Project #2:

Postcards from Across America

OA6X1492 as Smart Object-1

We love the name of this challenge (Road Trip), it fits us so well and our Crew decided to use the same Butterfly Die Cut to show how different they look when die cut them from vintage papers.  The American Vintage Collection from 7gypsies has everything you need to create projects for your travels across the US, from shore to shore, with stops along the way. Our tray documents many of the places we have traveled and leaves room for postcards and ephemera we have still yet to collect during our travels.

IMG_1502

What you will need:

Tools:  Paper Cutter, hole punch, scissors

Step 1:  Die cut a random assortment of butterflies using the front and the back of the paper to get a variety of prints, sizes and shapes.  The embossing and die cutting shows up just as well on the printed stock as they do on the solid papers.  The majority of our paper stock is 80# or heavier and the Spellbinders dies do an amazing job cutting through all of them and embossing them beautifully.  We know this photo is not able to show the embossing well, but trust us they are amazing.

Step 2:  Create this mini postcard book that is ready to be filled with notes, comments and memories from your journey.  You can die cut into parts of the cards and add photos and ephemera.

IMG_1486

Step 3:  (top left corner) – Fill this spot with your bucket list of places you want to visit.  The vintage license plates found in the American Vintage line can show off places you have been or want to go – there is one for every state.  We die cut the little birds with the all over map paper and they are perfect embellishments to add all over the tray.

Step 4: – Fill in the space with a little red and white stripe from your paper pad and die cut the frame and fill in with the USA flag from the American Vintage Ephemera Pack.

Step 5:  (3rd section down) – Slip in a postcard or another piece from the 8×8 that represents one of your favorite places you have traveled or a place you long to see.  The bottom tray space has a page of the vintage license plates – place a full sheet in or cut out the various states you have visited, then fill the bottom corner with die cut butterflies and swirls – we love the denim butterfly!!!

The detailed embossing and die cutting looks amazing on this printed paper.IMG_1287

Step 6: The top center box is filled with one of the American Vintage Journal cards and it truly looks like fabric slipped in there. Glue a Vintage Clip in place to hold photos, business cards from a favorite place you visited or something you picked up along the way.

OA6X1472 as Smart Object-2

Step 7: (bottom center) – Fill with more of the red and white stripe and add your favorite Gypsy Moments Cards, ephemera or pictures.  Once we had it all in place we added a few of the birds sitting on the wire cut from our vintage map.  We love how they peek around.  Die cut random frames to highlight photos, ephemera or states.  The variety of die cut sizes makes it easy to die cut just the right size.

OA6X1466 as Smart Object-1

Step 8: (right side) – The top section is the map of the USA that is found from our Gypsy Moments Cards – States I have visited. You can mark the states with a marker, metal dot, etc. to show off all the states you have visited.  This tray is a perfect gift for newlyweds, leave it blank and let them fill in as they travel together.

OA6X1477 as Smart Object-2

Step 9: (middle section) – The middle boxes are great places to add your favorite saying, ephemera piece or photo.  We even added a bottle you can fill with sand from the beach, clay from the mountains or rocks from the Grand Canyon.

OA6X1488 as Smart Object-1

Step 10: (bottom right) – The final section holds the Mini PostCard book you created above. We die cut with the frame and it diced little openings in the book letting our photos shine through.  Add journal entries, photos and little notes into your travel journal. OA6X1475 as Smart Object-2
