Wings on Wednesday – Altered Grater

Wings on Wednesday are here again and today we have for you a mixed media masterpiece!
Sanna Lippert transformed an old grater into an industrial-inspired piece of kitchen decor using old cigar labels as wings for her fork-bodied insect… words are not good enough to describe it but we’ll do our best…

When junking, I ran into old kitchen tools and this old, rusty grater was one of them. I altered it to a wall art piece with just a few simple steps. Most of the product I used is old or recycled. They got a layer of Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist on top and everything matches together. Now, it only needs to get framed and it is ready to decorate someone’s kitchen wall. – says Sanna.

Take the grater and apply some gesso onto it with a paint brush over the rusty areas. Thread the twine thru the upper and lowest grater holes to create a weaving pattern.

Take several old book pages and mist them with the Glimmer Mist tones mentioned in the materials list.

Apply grey Glimmer Mist on to the gessoed area and let dry.

Take the misted, dry book pages and fold into rolls. Now, weave those rolls through the twine until you reach the very top of the twine.

Add yellow, red and grey Chalkboard ink splatters for additional interest onto the surface. Let dry.

Take a piece of eco-dyed canvas fabric and Architextures Grow parchment rub-ons and add a plant rub-on image onto the fabric piece. Attach the fabric to the grater with red yarn with a few random stitches.

Take a sheet of Ordre Du Jour 8×8 paper by 7gypsies and adhere some Tim Holtz Stickers onto the paper. Apply a layer of Glossy Accents on top and let dry properly. Cut along the edges when dry. Adhere some old cigar labels to form “wings”. Add some twine and then attach an antique silver fork with Gel Medium onto the centre of the cigar labels.

Finally add some sentiment stickers (misted and covered with Glossy Accents) on top and to the bottom for decoration. I chose the sentiment saying “Keep some room in your hear for the Farmhouse Kitchen”. The word Farmhouse Kitchen is fussy cut from the Canvas Corp paper mentioned in the material list. Then add the previously fussy cut stickers here and there onto the piece for decoration. Add the studs and random found objects (golden apple) to the piece as well as some wooden stars that are misted with Glimmer Mist tones, also used previously. Apply a layer of Glossy Accent to the stars and adhere with Gel Medium to the piece. This way they will not come off later. It is important to let the layers dry properly. Remember that Gel Medium needs a drying time.

Now the altered piece is done and only needs to be framed and hung on display. I hope you liked this little altered home decor piece tutorial and get inspired to reuse and recycle your own old tools and cutlery.

Happy crafting, Sanna

What an incredibly creative idea & It’s good to know that gesso + mist works on metal. I’d totally have this hanging in my kitchen.
