Southwestern Abstract Cross Painted Art

Mandy shares with us this amazing mixed media canvas and shows you how to make your own custom artwork your style your way to fill the walls of your home, create a personalized gift or to just let your creativity run wild.  A few Tattered Angels Paints, some ropes and cords, a touch of burlap and canvas and some 7gypsies metals and wow the results are simply amazing.

ABSTRACT CROSS PAINTING

Mandy here sharing an art piece featuring an abstract cross. I was inspired to incorporate a cross into my artwork but wasn’t sure what direction to take it. I decided to go abstract with this piece. I would describe my living room décor as Southwestern/Mission style and I thought this mixed media project would compliment my Navajo warrior painting perfectly. I also wanted to submit this project for the Tatter Yourself Challenge. I am now hanging this décor piece on my living room wall.

Abstract Cross

You will need:

  1. 18″x24″ Stretched Natural Canvas
  2. Canvas Fringe
  3. Canvas Shape – Rectangle
  4. Burlap Shape – Square
  5. Mini Burlap Shape – Square
  6. 7gypsies – Round Hanger
  7. Hemp Cord – Aqua
  8. Black Waxed Cord
  9. Tattered Angels -Plain Jane Baseboard – Cardboard
  10. Tattered Angels – Plain Jane Baseboard- Bittersweet
  11. Tattered Angels – Plain Jane Baseboard-Simply Sheer – Rich Brown
  12. Tattered Angels -Plain Jane Baseboard Wave
  13. Tattered Angels – High Impact – Orange
  14. Tattered Angels – High Impact – Aqua 15
  15. Tattered Angels – High Impact – Copper Metallic 16
  16. Tattered Angels – High Impact – Black
  17. Tattered Angels – Glimmer Glaze – Cowboy
  18. Tattered Angels Glimmer Glaze – Pewter
  19. Modeling Paste

Steps:

I started by spraying Semi Opaque Matte Mist Pain Jane Baseboard Paint  Cardboard in a cross like pattern. I let the spray drip randomly down the 18″x24″” natural canvas.  Canvas Corp Stretched Canvases do not have gesso like other artist canvases and the Tattered Angels Mists love natural canvas, the color is so vibrant and the misted paint colors look amazing.

Abstract Cross5

I added and layered various Canvas Corp Shapes as my center point for the cross. I adhered the pieces with modeling paste. I sprayed the pieces with more Baseboard paint Cardboard.

Abstract Cross6

I added Black High Impact Paint around the layered shapes. I let the paint drip down the canvas keeping the black details centered around the cross.

Abstract Cross7

When everything dried I went over some of the canvas with modeling paste. I wanted to add texture and I had the Grand Canyon in my thoughts while working on this part. When that dried I added layers of paints and mists over the texture letting them dry between each application. The project isn’t quite finished here. I wanted to add Tattered Angels Rich Brown Plain Jane – Simply Sheer over the bright orange/copper detailing. The Rich Brown toned down the coloring and gave it a distressed look.

Abstract Cross8

Here is the finished project in a grouping with my Southwestern style décor.

Abstract Cross9

You can see in this photo how the Rich Brown added distressed detailing and toned down the Copper and Orange coloring.

Abstract Cross2

I purposely offset the cross detailing to the left of the canvas to create interest. The project took some time because I added layers of different mists and paints. I had a lot of fun creating this piece and it’s a first for “abstract” work for me. I plan to create more pieces similar to this. I hope I inspired you to do the same!

Happy Crafting!

Hi! Your piece is really spectacular! Great start for the “first time” and very brave! The colors are my some of my absolute favorites. The simple cross shape really morphed into a not so simple statement piece and to my eye is very abstract, in my humble opinion. I’m very interested in mixed media and altered art just haven’t the courage to try ANYTHING! 🙂 You’ve definitely inspired me to try. TYFS!! Oh! And keep up the great work. I’ve pinned some pics for future reference. Looking forward to more!!
