Mixed media can be vibrant and colorful and these days it seems as if there are no limits to what designers are doing with color and materials, with the color palettes they are creating and exploring way outside of the traditional crafting boundaries. Black and white photos, black and white imagery and black and white crafting is truly spectacular. Black and white really means shades of black and white so the texture, the shadows, the details are simply amazing together.
Canvas Corp loves to create in black and white and in black and ivory – both are the same family, but some things look great on stark white and others look perfect on a cream or ivory color. Marie Johansson, one of our fabulous Canvas Corp Brands Crew Members, created 3 amazing pieces to showcase how great black and white can look.
Making a monochromatic project is a perfect way to explore new (and old) products. The choose of color could be made with inspiration from a picture, a feeling or maybe a new product line you want to play with. When you decide what color to use, it leads you to search trough your collected material to find suitable things to use. This is what happened when this canvas was crated.
The new Heirloom Collection consists of black and white papers with a heritage team. The choose of using the Pen and Ink paper made it natural to use black, grey and white for this project, and Canvas Corp Brands has a many suitable products for this color scheme.

Heirloom Black & White Mixed Media Canvas
Start with an 8×8 Natural Stretched Canvas or the canvas size of your choice and spray with water. Then mist with Glimmer Mist & Baseboard Mists and add splatters of Glimmer Glaze to form the base for the project. Modeling paste applied through a rose stencil was painted with Glimmer Glaze and Glimmer Mist to add a bit of texture and shifting color. You can add stamped art and other details to created your background.
Once dry, cut out art from the Pen & Ink paper to make a focal point together with the heritage picture and black cord. The fussy cut vintage art in black and white looks amazing and has a feel of a vintage stamp, but so much easier.
Add a vintage photo, trinkets, buttons and glass glitter that you can paint with Glimmer Glam to make it sparkle even more.

Dream Without Fear Black & White Card
The combination of different textures, products and patterns in black and white creates a stunning work of art. Marie created this card that is very different from the canvas, but using the same very simple, very classy color palette, black and white.
Products for the Card:
- Canvas Corp Black & White Printed Cardstock (white on one side and black on the other)
- Canvas Corp Black e-flute
- Canvas Corp Tissuestock – Damask
- Canvas Corp 12×12 Burlap – Black
- Canvas Corp 12×12 Butterflies Paper
- Other items – flowers, buttons, gems or found jewelry pieces
- Tools – paper cutter, scissors, glue
Layer the cardstock and e-glute to create the base of your card. Crumple the tissue stock and glue to the e-flute. The tissue is made with a special finish and thicker tissue than you will find for gift wrapping so it will stand up better when you use it for crafts, you can use it for gift wrapping too.
Fussy cut one of your favorite butterflies and bend the wings to create the dimension. No color needed, the artwork is beautiful just like it is and it makes a beautiful focal piece for the card.
Add flowers, buttons and embellishments all in silvers, whites and blacks to finish off your card and then add a saying – we love Marie’s choice – Dream Without Fear!!!

We asked Heather Kindt who is also part of the crew and an artist, write and contributor to many craft publications to share with us one of her black & white art journal pages so that we could showcase a very different look at black and white and the amazing contrast.
Creating a collage of papers that are white/ivory with black with black papers featuring white/ivory artwork. The combination of prints, scale and designs creates a very dynamic look and shows off Heather’s title – High Contrast – Never Subtle.
Adding black & white lettering is a great way to tell your story. Heather adds lettering to most of her art journals and loves to play with different pens and markers, always taking them to their limits. When lettering Heather suggested starting with a thin line to make your words and then go over them a few times creating an artsy look and covering up and fumbles you might have made. Lettering is a fun way to add your thoughts without having to search for stickers, a saying or card that tries to say what you need to say.
