A VINTAGE CHRISTMAS WITH 7GYPSIES

The gypsies seem to get extra excited and extra creative during the holidays and this year is no different.  Clever ideas for decorating your home for the holidays in a gypsy style, wrapping vintage gifts or just making Christmas with a vintage vibe are popping up everywhere and we just have to share them.  When it comes to creating nostalgic holiday decor, look around for props, objects to trace and touches of old and new.

Gypsy Seamstress Holiday

The first thing you will want to do is get out the sewing machine, cookie cutters, scissors and vintage papers (don’t worry if they are not all holiday themed, the shapes help solve that problem).  If you don’t have a sewing machine just follow along, grab the glue and draw in the stitches or use washi tape and have a ball.  Here are some ideas to get the juices flowing for your vintage holiday crafts this year.

Copper Cookie Cutters & Vintage Printed Papers

copper cookie cutters as stencils
Trace your favorite holiday shaped cookie cutters onto vintage papers to create the perfect holiday craft supplies. Don’t worry if the papers are not holiday-themed, the shape of the cookie cutter tells the story.  No cookie cutters? No problem! Just print off or draw vintage style Christmas trees, bells, stars, snowmen, snowflakes, gingerbread people and more.

stitched gift bags

Take two pieces of paper like this vintage beauty from the 7gypsies Gypsy Seamstress collection and Canvas Corp Gold & White Mini Roses Rev and cut them to size making the back sheet about 1.5″ taller than the front paper.  Stitch the papers together with a fun stitch. We used our Brother Machine and love all the stitch choices, but sometimes a good zig-zag is what the creative doctor orders.  Flip the top part over to close the bag and secure with a clip or clothespin.  Finish with  Christmas tree tag with stitched burlap garland.   These papers are both cardstock weight which makes them good and sturdy for making bags and even boxes.  If you have a box or bag die cut you can start there too and glue or stitch them up like this one shown below.

Stitched Canvas and Paper Christmas Trees

Grab a few sets of Canvas Corp Triangle Shapes or cut your own canvas triangles to create simple tree shapes and then cut accent papers in vintage, reds and greens to stitch on top.  Our stems are paper measuring sticks from the 7gypsies Gypsy Seamstress Tape Measure.  This is a great project to try out different stitches with your sewing machine, we found some we just loved.

Lots of stitches and paper make each one unique and give them an eclectic look that is so terrific together.  The stars were cut from star shaped cookie cutters and a bit of burlap.

vintage holiday garland

Hang collection from a cute cord above the stove, mantel or under a window.

Or gather the gifts, Santas, and cookie cutters to make a little vintage holiday display.

If you don’t have a mantel, why not add your garland or banner around the table with a touch of jute and a few clothespins?

kraft gift wrap paper and handmade tags

Wrap boxes in plain kraft paper and add stitched paper, burlap ornaments, and tags.  Using simple gift wrap along with mix and match papers to make the tags look amazing together.

So if you want to add a vintage vibe but the stores and shops don’t have exactly what you hoped for your gift wrap, tags or holiday decor, whip up some fun things with supplies and papers you might just have around the house.
