ART Book of Recipes: Patio Rules

Hi everyone, Heidi from www.makeyourlifecolourful.com here, today I’m showing you an art journal page in my “ART Book of Recipes“. You can read how I designed the cover for this journal and the story behind it HERE. The insert I’m working in is a 7gypsies Starter Blank Journal in the color “Kraft“ in the size 5×7.

Step 1:

I started my page by cutting two panels from watercolor paper (slightly smaller then 5×7). I adhered these two panels together on the back using temporary tape. Then I’m applying some The Crafter’s Workshop “Light & Fluffy Modeling Paste“ over a The Crafter’s Workshop stencil (TCW775s) using a palette knife and let that dry.

When the modeling paste was dry I added color to this background: for this I choose Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist in the color “Kiwi“. I added the mist to my project using a brush and then sprayed with water, which makes the color run and then I dried what I had when I liked the result, using a heat tool. This I repeated several times. Then I added splatters also using a brush and the same color of Glimmer Mist.

Step 2:

Now I’m going to work on one of the focal points for my project: on some Strathmore “Bristol Smooth Surface“ paper I stamped the largest image from the Art Impressions stamp set called “Live Laugh Love“ using Versafine “Onyx Black“ ink and then I clear heat embossed (this way the lines will stay crisp and black).

Next I watercolored the image using some gorgeous colors of Glimmer Mist and one Zig Clean Color Real Brush Marker (because I didn’t have a Glimmer Mist that could pass for a skin color). I choose the following colors of Glimmer Mist: “Black Cherry“, “Navy Blue“, “Lobster“, “Dijon“ and “Tattered Leather“. The Zig Marker I used for the skin is “Pale Pink“.

I first used a clean brush to wet the area I wanted to color in one particular color, then I used a brush to ad Glimmer Mist to that area starting from the shadow side of the item I’m coloring, then cleaning my brush and blending the water with the color the way it looked nice.

When the watercoloring was dry I added in some highlights with a white Gelly Roll pen and let that dry. And finally I fussy cut around the image using my scissors, leaving a small edge.

Step 3:

For the right hand side of my journal page I used the “Patio Rules “ text from the Canvas Corp paper called “Lemonade & Sweet Tea Sayings on White“. I just fussy cut around the straw outlines leaving a small white edge.

To create a bit more interest in the background I choose to ad a layer created from a piece of Canvas Corp “Tan & Ivory Mini Dot Reverse“ paper. I tore the edges of this paper for a more distinctive look.

Step 4:

Now I can put my page together: I adhered the Patio Rules on top of the dotted paper using liquid glue and then adhered this layered combination to the right hand part of the two watercolor panels using one millimetre thick foam tape. On the left hand page I adhered the ladies that I colored with Glimmer Mist also using one millimetre thick foam tape.

Next I edged both panels a little with Distress Ink in the color “Vintage Photo“ and using a foam applicator tool. And to finish my page I adhered both panels to the kraft colored journal using gel medium.
