Step by step tutorial on how to create a fun art journal page

Hi everyone, Heidi from www.makeyourlifecolourful.com here, today I’m showing you an art journal page created with a minimum of supplies. This is to show that you don’t need tons of craft supplies to be able to create fun projects!

Today I’m working in my 7gypsies Architextures “Vintage Pink“ Mix and Match Book and I choose a page with a script/ledger background. The fun thing about this Mix and Match Book is that you can take pages out while you’re working on it and you can put it back in when you’re finished. And even though the pages are not made out of watercolor paper they can handle a lot of water, so that’s always a plus! I really enjoy working in this art journal, it’s one of my favourites!

Step 1:

I started my page by applying Finnabair “White Crackle Texture Paste” over a The Crafter’s Workshop stencil (TCW775s) using a palette knife and then letting it dry by itself (overnight for example, don’t dry this paste with your heat tool, there will be almost no crackles that way!).

When the paste was dry I applied some Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist in the color “Woven Burlap“ to the project using a brush, adding water using a spray bottle, which makes the color run and then drying with my heat tool. This I repeated several times until I was happy with the result. I also splattered with the same color of Tattered Angels Mist for a more vintage look.

I love how this background turned out!

Step 2:

Now I’m going to create the focal point for my page: the quote is from the beautiful Canvas Corp 12×12 paper called “Nautical on Ivory“. I also used a piece from the Canvas Corp paper called “Black & Kraft Ribbon Stripe“ and the anchor is from the Canvas Corp paper called “Sand & Sea Art Pages on Kraft“ (part of the “At the Beach“ collection). I fussy cut the anchor, and the other parts I distressed with an edge distresser (but you can also use your scissors).

In the end I wanted to ad a little pop op color to the page and that’s why I also added in some small pieces of Canvas Corp paper called “Blue & Ivory Chevron“ that I tore to the right size.

Step 3:

Now I can layer the pieces of paper that I created in the previous step. To adhere them together I used liquid glue and when I was happy with my design I added them to my page using one millimetre thick foam tape. To finish my page I edged it with Memento ink in the color “Espresso Truffle“ using a foam applicator tool (for a little bit more of a defined edge).

And that’s it for today’s art journal page with use of minimum supplies!
