What happens when you put products from two great companies together – magic!!! Right!!! That is just what happened when Crew Member, Patti Senter got her hands on some of the new mixed media goodies from The Crafter’s Workshop (TCW) and stencils and dove into her bag of goodies from Canvas Corp Brands (CCB) for a CCB Match Up – Some might call it a blog hop, we like to refer to it as a Match Up where we get to see how the products work together, play with different mediums and open up our minds to new ideas. It is our goal to tell you some fun things yo can do with all the products, teach a new technique or two and just have fun. Let’s see what Patti did with for the Match Up and don’t forget to see details at the bottom on how you can win a wonderful prize that is worth over $50 in goodies from CCB and TCW.
When I received the Match Up products for Canvas Corp Brands and The Crafter’s Workshop instantly I thought Art Journal page. After all I’d had my art journal book for well over a year and had only accomplished one page in it. I loved all the yummy Glimmer Mists from Tattered Angels and The Crafter’s Workshop mediums, well they were just down right intriguing. I was on my way or so I thought. Watching others create Art Journal pages is a pastime I partake in often, but having only found the courage to create one of my own presented a heart palpitating experience, self doubt here I come. Today’s journey will show you it’s a learning, work in progress. Sometimes when things just aren’t going as you see them in your mind’s eye you just have to keep forging forward and working through the process. After all it’s all about what makes your heart sing with happiness when you look at what you’ve created. Often it just doesn’t happen it takes reworking and replaying until you can sit back and say, yes that’s it. Well this is today’s journal page. At the beginning I considered, ripping the pages out of my journal, stopping the video and creating a new page, or just doing a different project. I persevered and learned a lot along the way. The most important thing was I can do it, and I can have fun at the same time. If you’ve not attempted an art journal page please pick up some products and just start playing, you’ll be amazed at how fulfilled you’ll feel when that page is done. After all, if I can do it you certainly can do it too!
To begin my art journal page I did a little prepping by masking off an outside border with Post a Note tape and sliding some Freezer paper under the pages to catch drips, oversprays and spills and then I covered the entire surface with Clear Gesso from TCW.
I started by mixing Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists with the TCW Light & Fluffy Modeling Paste to use through various TCW stencils, here I’m using the Daisy Chain. On the video you’ll see that the Glimmer Mists are used on their own as well as mixed with the TCW Modeling Paste, it all depends on the look I’m going for. You simply must experiment, playing is the best means to a happy page.
Adding other elements such as fussy cut birds from Canvas Corp The Watering Can Birds & Bees on Ivory and a tad bit of Canvas Corp Chocolate Burlap creates a textured interest on the page. The secret is remembering this is a page in a book that needs to be closed, so all elements must be able to lay fairly flat.
I love to write, to express myself with pen and ink so it’s a natural conclusion to put my thoughts on the journal page. This time I chose to write around the frame but journaling could be placed anywhere, visual so everyone can read or see, or beneath other layers so only I know what’s been written. This is a personal journey, one that would be very different for you from me. It’s a fantastic way to express yourself with different mediums.
If you haven’t taken the time to try an art journal page now is the perfect opportunity. CCB and TCW play so nicely together that your possibilities for products to use between the two is extensive. Most of all just create and have fun! Be sure and check out my video for the whole step by step process.
Mixed Media is not my norm, it’s not that fuzzy place that I call my comfort zone. BUT, it’s where I’d told myself I’d move into in 2017. Matching up TCW with Canvas Corp Brands this month was the perfect opportunity for me to push myself into this area of crafting. I’ve done a few things but my confidence level just wasn’t there. I’m not sure if I was worried the Crafting Police would break down my craft room door and haul me away for trying but I’d take all these gorgeous yummy supplies out, look them all over, and then I’d put them all away again. Since making these cards, and deciding to just having fun playing with all these fabulous products, I can tell you right now you’ll be seeing more mixed media coming from my craft room this year.
To a sheet of Canson Watercolor paper I used TCW’s Morrocan Tiles Template with TCW Clear Gesso on 3 tiles and 3 tiles with TCW Light & Fluffy Modeling Paste, which I tinted with Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist in Olive Vine, Capri Blue and Lobster. I found I needed very little product to make a statement and effect. One thing I did discover was the drying time on the Clear Gesso was much faster than I was. I would suggest if you are doing multiple squares do no more than 3 at a time, remove and clean the template, dry your design and then continue on.
Starting with the Canvas Corp 12×12 Paper Brushes on Ivory I fussy cut all the pieces out. To color I assembled drops of colors in my painters pallet using Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists in Olive Vine, Sun Sisters, Lobster and Capri Blue along with Glimmer Glam in Rustic. From TCW I used the Shimmering Gold Gesso. First I thought I’d just use the Gesso for the paintbrush handles but the more I played I realized I could mix the Gesso with the Mists and come us with a whole array of new shimmering colors.
Fun stuff!
Next I sprayed the sheet numerous times with the Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists and water, rolling the paper and drying to achieve the look that I liked. There is no right or wrong here, you just continue spraying and drying until you get the colors and designs that you like. When I was happy I cut the watercolor paper into six card mats, using 3 3⁄4 x 4 1⁄2″ as the finished size. Before mounting to Canvas Corp bulk Kraft card bases (I trimmed these also to 4″ to fit the mats) I edged the mats in TCW’s Shimmering Gold and Black Gessos. This created a eye real popping effect and eliminated the bulk of paper matting.
The final step, and of course the most fun, is assembling the cards. With the mats and brushes painted it’s just a matter of combining what looked good to my eye. I had created some sentiments which I printed on my pc. In order to keep the printer ink from running (mine isn’t a laser printer) I sprayed my white cardstock with the Tattered Angels Glimmermists prior to printing making sure it was very dry then when I printed the sentiments out I already had color in place. Of course like most crafters the best laid plains get changed in the process. As I was coloring the brushes I realized that the sentiments still looked to white and pristine so I tore them into the sizes I’d want and dipped their edges through the mists on my craft sheet. This worked perfectly.
I wrapped it all up by adding sentiments or brushes to finish the insides. I hope you’ll try out all the wonderful templates and mixed media products from TCW, they are fantastic to work with. Pair them up with Canvas Corp and Tattered Angels and you have nothing but a winning combination!
