Hi again, it’s Anna here, sending you the best wishes for the new, creative year 2011 🙂 January is a month of canvas for the Tattered Angels Design Team, so we all are sharing our ideas for using Tattered Angels products on it – in every possible way.
I’d like to show you m ideas and encourage you to experiment with canvas a bit more – if you try it once, you’ll love it for the rest of your life. Tattered Angels and canvas are just meant to go together – let me try convince you about it now!
My first project is an altered canvas blank, grungy and vintage in style, embellished with laces, metal buttons, pins and other different objects from my collection – usually well covered with rust. The photo was transferred o the Sticky Back Canvas, then set together with laces and crochet elements and put on a canvas blank, which corners were stamped with my favourite swirl stamps and black ink. To color the project I used mostly Glimmer Mists in the shades of blue, green and brown: Patina, Turquoise Blue , Slate, Olive Vine, Honey Dew Mist, Sand and Gold, sprayed on the canvas and dried with a heating tool. Two colours of Glimmer Glaze: Chianti and Waterfall were used for adding and extra touch to the transferred photo and embellishments.
I wanted this canvas to look vintage and delicate but also colorful, so I took rather light shades of Glimmer Mist – it worked beautifully both with sprayed canvas and laces, giving the project an extra depth and texture.
My second project is a paper layout named “Flow”, with canvas embellishments on it and totally custom background – created with Glimmer Mists from the lovely Limited Spring 2011 – Bahama Cruise Line. To color the background and canvas elements I took three colors: Marmalade, Sun Sisters and Rum Punch, which go together beautifully. The background paper were sprayed with an extra paper cards put on it – to get nice masking effect – and then sprayed a bit more with water, to make it more wet and create the “flowing color”. I really love those color lines, especially combined with a red stamping (Screen Print Compass stamp) and some machine stitching. The embellishments are made with some old canvas and Sticky Back Canvas, sprayed with Spring 2011 colors and then put in the right places of the layout. Easy – but very eye-cathing!
And to end up – my all-time-favorite: canvas collage layout, with my beloved found objects, which I collect compulsively. They really make my creativity go wild and give me the chance to show different aspects of mixed-media – and aspects of me. Rubbish and Glimmer Mists are a perfect match, and objects of my deepest love in one – which is easy to see on the canvas below, I think:)
“Shadow” is composed on a 8×8” canvas blank. The background is mostly canvas, Sticky Back Canvas and laces, which were in some places painted with black acrylic and gave me a nice looking texture. On the top of it I placed my photo and a set of found objects: computer and dvd player elements, some wires, watches – but also paper and fabric flowers and a pair of old paintbrushes. I used Heavy Gel Medium to stick it all together.
It was all colored with Glimmer Mists in the shades of black, green and blue (Raven, Slate, Midnight Blue, Sapphire, Meadow Green), combined with Chalkboard Glimmer Mist – Chalk – and a bit of gesso. My final touch was painting on the photo – the “eyeshadow” is Patina and Midnight Blue Glimmer Mists, painted right onto the photo with a small paintbrush – I love this technique and Glimmer Mists work just perfect as watercolors too!

Hi – I have tried using Glimmer Mists on canvas (blank canvases, such as you would purchase at Michaels), and I am definitely not seeing the color stay or “soak in” the way it seems to on the projects posted here. I had to spray and dry multiple times to even get a hint of color, and finally gave up and covered the canvas with patterned paper. Any suggestions?

It could be two different factors or both. Which Glimmer Mist Color did you use- some of our lighter colors are more supposed to be blending colors and they really do not show well on canvas. And…was it treated canvas- treated with Gesso? Because with the Gesso it is also harder for the colors to set. If you have a mixture of both factors it is not working. I hope this helps !
