Every single crafter will have piles of scrap pieces of paper waiting for their time to be used. What better occasion to show them some love than Valentine’s Day? Dana Tatar, one of the Canvas Corp Crew Members, shows you how to use the unloved bits and pieces to create amazing collage-based cards and home decor. For this project, she used Canvas Corp Pattern Papers. They come in various colours and patterns which makes them extremely versatile; perfect for scrapbooking, card making and all kinds of mixed media projects. Take a look for yourself…
‘I’ve challenged myself to be less wasteful this year; my other goal is to try new things. I combined both of these concepts for this project and created my own collage paper, which is an old technique but something that I rarely do. All the tiny scraps of paper and fabric leftover from past projects have an exciting second life as Valentine cards and home decor. I was able to create 3 3×5 cards with embellished envelopes and a small home decor board, all with one 12×12 collage.’ – says Dana.

Decide your color palette and style for your collage and gather all the bits and pieces you have, you might not use them all, but it is good to have choices.
Tear up paper scraps, ephemera, and book pages. If you like a more distressed look, you can ink the edges with any of the Simply Sheer or Glimmer Mist colors and they will look wonderfully old. Glue in layers onto a piece of 12×12 cardstock.
Further embellish the collage paper with fabric scraps, punchinella, glassine, and buttons.
Doodle onto the collage paper with a black marker. Add 7G rubbings to several areas of the collage.
Handmade Valentine Cards
Cut 3 3×5 pieces from the collage paper and glue onto the front of blank cards. Add sentiments cut from ephemera to the front of each card. Further embellish each card with more buttons and a metal charm. Cut the leftover collage paper into strips and glue to the front of each card envelope.
Valentine Art
Cover the House from the 7G Love Board Kit, or any chipboard shape, with collage paper. Further embellish the board with ephemera, buttons, and metal charms and hardware. Cut a sentiment for this piece from the Gypsy Moments Express Yourself patterned paper. Use a hot glue gun to adhere hot pink cord around the edge of the board.
How absolutely fabulous are those Valentine’s Day cards?! The best thing about this collage technique is that, depending on what papers you use, you can make cards and tags for any occasion. Brilliant, right?
