Crew Interview – Cathy Frailey

It’s time for another post in our Canvas Corp Crew Interviews. We are extremely privileged to be able to work with a group of over a 100 of amazing designers from around the world. They have all come together to create, share ideas, support each other, let us know what we can do better and remind us of what we are doing well.  Our Crew members contribute projects to our blog, design with our products on their blogs, create models for our trade shows, packaging and other fun little projects.  We love to hear what they have to say, to be inspired by their work and to learn new things everyday.
Today, we get to know Cathy Frailey.

Where do you reside? City, State, Country
I am from Williamstown, WV, USA.

Describe your design style…
I love mixed media, art/junk journaling, and upcycling. I use everything from cardboard boxes to utensils to cans and bottles – nothing gets wasted! My style is grungy, vintage, steampunk, odd – I like weird and different and experimenting but can incorporate any style.

Who or what do you give credit to inspiring your creativity?
I started back in the 70s as a kid with doll craft kits. They had the foam bodies, sequins, pipe cleaners, doll heads – everything to make a complete doll in different styles. I don’t really have one thing I can point to as inspiration – I studied a variety of websites and videos of different products and projects. I really like experimenting to do things that aren’t the norm.

What inspires you today?
I would say it’s the different companies and design teams I’ve been on. They allow for a wide variety of creativity.

What is your favorite Canvas Corp Brand Product? and why? Just one please!!!
I’d have to pick Tattered Angels Glimmer Mists! They add alot of shimmer and dimension, depending on how you apply it.

We asked Cathy to choose her favorite project she has created using CCB Products.

Why is it your favorite project?
It represents my style completely – a little grunge, a little steampunk, a little vintage, and a little out of the ordinary.

Do you teach and if so tell us a bit about what you teach, where you go and some of your favorite places?
I don’t teach at the moment.

I am the happiest doing…
…any type of art. I like to sketch and watercolor and love art journaling using different media.

My favorite place to be creative…
…is in my artsy workspace. It’s upstairs where there’s nobody else, except maybe Buster our black Lab.

Tell us one cool detail about your studio or craft space…
All of the storage my hubby has given me! He comes home from shopping somewhere and has another container or shelves for me to use.

Tell us one thing fun about you we might not know…
I’ve flown in an F-16 Fighting Falcon jet twice. I used to work for the government at an F-16 squadron and won a couple awards which allowed me the opportunity.

Share with us anything about your creative life that you feel would inspire others…
I would say just go for it. A friend of mine convinced me to start a blog last year. Since then, I’ve gained alot of followers and friends on my blog as well as FB and IG. I’ve won challenges and have been on alot of DTs as well. I’ve even started my own challenge blog! It’s allowed me to express myself artistically and I’ve grown alot with my style.
I’d just say take opportunities as they’re presented to you – don’t be afraid to put yourself out there!

You can see Cathy’s projects on her blog, InstagramFacebook page and of course here, our blog.

Thank you for stopping by! Have a great day!

Great interview, Cathy! I love your style….and I remember those foam doll kits too; I think my favourite was the Carmen Miranda-style doll with the fruit basket on her head!
