Decorating Ideas for Graduation and Summer Parties

Do you love to throw an outdoor or summer party?  Maybe it is for a birthday, wedding shower, graduation, or just because.  Summer is such a pretty time of the year and a fun time to decorate.

As part of a match up with Petaloo International this week we thought it would be fun to dump the beautiful flowers out, let our creative juices flow, and use the flowers to decorate for an upcoming Summer Graduation Party.

Petaloo and Canvas Corp Brands

Pink is our graduate’s favorite color even though they are not her school colors.  We decided we did not care and went for an all pink theme.

Petaloo Flowers Stripe Paper

Petaloo has an entire collection of DIY flowers that are all white and ready to be painted, misted, inked or stained.Cat in the Flowers We were getting ready to start painting and a little help from CC the Company Cat came our way.  Baby Girl Pink Baseboard Mist was our go to paint for this project.  No glimmer, no glam, just straight soft color, and it was just what we hoped for.  That cat left leaving little pink paw prints across the table.

Baby Girl Pink Baseboard Mist and DIY FlowersAfter they were dry, we glued a row of them onto two 7gypsies Vintage Banners with Beacon’s 3 in 1 Glue.

IMG_0059We could not stop misting those flowers because they looked so cool. We misted enough to cover this Canvas Corp Shape – Triangle.

Petaloo DIY Flowers

Add a light mist of the Baby Girl Pink to the canvas banner, and glue to the top of a paper banner cut slightly larger than the canvas banner. Finish with a Canvas Corp Burlap Flower in Pink.  You can add more mist to create a deeper color, or add touches of brown or tan mist like Tattered Leather to create a vintage, distressed look.

Paper and Canvas Pennant

So bring it all together and you have the sweetest bunting for your party decor.  You can make it as long as you need, and add different versions and shapes of the pink, canvas, and floral combinations.  This simple banner is so easy to do and looks so elegant and classy.

Pink Canvas & Floral Bunting

canvas and flower banner pinkWhat we used:  2- 7gypsies Vintage Canvas Banners; 1 sheet of Canvas Corp 12×12 black and ivory fleur de lis paper; 1 pack of Canvas Corp Canvas Pennants; 1 bottle Tattered Angels Baby Girl Pink Baseboard Mist; 2 Canvas Corp Burlap Flowers Lt. Pink ; 1 Canvas Corp Lt. Pink Fringe; 2 packages Petaloo DIY Paintables – Forgetmenots; 1 packages Petaloo DIY Paintables – Mixed Blossoms; Beacon 3 in 1 Glue

Run the fringe through the channel in the 7gypsies banners, and then clip the banner pieces onto the burlap fringe with the mini clothespins – the pieces are light, so the little ones work perfect and look so sweet.

Add your banner to a wall, across an old door, or cover a backdrop with old papers or wallpaper to make your own backdrop.

Repurpose Jar Party Decor

Looking for simple idea for the entry table, centerpieces, or by the cake?  Here is a great way to re-purpose a wide range of jars, and create the perfect touch that matches your party decor theme and color palette.  Ask friends and family to gather jars for you, don’t overlook pickle jars, salsa jars, and specialty food jars.  Many of them have amazing detailing in the glass that stands out when painted or tinted.

You can mist the canvas, paper flowers, silk flowers, live flowers, burlap, paper, etc. with Tattered Angels Mists. The canvas and the flowers were misted with the same color, it is amazing how the canvas shows the deepest tone of the color.  Working with tone on tone looks great.

painted white jar with white flowers

We left some of the flowers white so they would stand out a bit.  The touch of different pinks looks so sweet on this mason jar.  Just clip a run of the Petaloo flowers onto waxed cotton cord with the mini clothespins, and the scale and detailing is perfect.

Each jar is a bit different, but they look great together.  Choose your colors and materials, and gather them so you have plenty to work with as you created your decor.  The white milk bucket style jar was found at a vintage shop with a”yucky” label on it, but a little washing and it looks amazing in this ensemble.  You can fill the jars with fresh baby’s breath, pens for notes and signatures, little candies or water and a candle.

One of the most important things a party needs is a guest book.  To make a simple guest book that matches your theme, all you need is a 7gypsies Naked Journal (they come in 5×7 and 8.5×11 – and in 2 colors: kraft and ivory), simply cover it with the paper of your choice, add a time of cord, jute or ribbon and find a matching marker or pen and you are ready for signatures, notes and messages.  These are so simple to make, you could put one on each table and we know the comments and messages will be even more personal.

What we used:  3 jars; 1 bottle of Tattered Angels White High Impact Paint (you might need more depending on the number of jars you are painting – each bottle is 1.35 ounces); 1 package of Canvas Corp Canvas Pennants; 1 12×12 Canvas Corp Fleur de lis paper; 1 Canvas Corp Waxed Cotton Cord – Lt. Pink; 1 pack Lt. Pink Mini Clothespins; 1 7gypsies Naked Journal – Ivory 5×7; 1 pack Petaloo DIY Flowers Forgetmenots; 1 pack Petaloo DIY Flowers Mixed Blossoms; Beacon 3 in 1 Glue

So grab an old table and paint it white or a light color, if it does not look the way you want it to (but remember old and distressed means personality, so try it like it is first).  Then, create a little centerpiece of goodies with a banner backdrop.  You can expand all these ideas to decorate in other areas such as the tables, the bride and groom table, the cake table, the gift table, etc.

DIY Wedding Decor IdeasSo next time you are in charge of the party decor, pick a theme, your colors, some basic craft supplies, and some objects you can re-purpose. The results will be stunning and inexpensive too.
