Keep it simple with a simple design added to the tree skirt that matches your decor. Use a stencil or stamp and if you are comfortable with hand-painting it is a lovely touch. If you do a family ornament tree, ask the kids to each add a painted icon to the tree skirt and keep the handmade family tradition going.
If a bit more natural and rustic is your style, how about a simple burlap tree skirt with a fluffy white trim that might just look a bit like Santa’s beard.
