We are in full swing of summer which got me thinking about summer weddings and with receiving
Aga Baraniak’s paper collection “Compose Your Life” it seem so fitting to create an Altered Wedding Cake.
I gathered up the beautiful papers which I picked out – three that spoke to my soul.
I loved the white, grey tones in these papers with tiny rose buds and branches with a distressed feel.
How perfect are they for a altered wedding cake, wedding decoration, invitations and so much more.
Let me walk you through how I created this beautiful airy “Altered Wedding Cake”…
I found three paper mache nesting boxes which I roughly white washed with Gesso paint. I left some of the raw Kraft color of the boxes peaking through to help give the wedding cake a weathered worn look and feel. One thing I do know is that Canvas Corp Brands have products with a great natural distressed look and feel that goes with almost anything you want to create.
Gathering up is one of my favorite things to do when I create a project so I reached for paper, tissue stock, dies, cheese cloth, jute twine to got started. The papers were Canvas Corp by Aga Barnariak “Be Original, Beautiful life, Let Tiny Buds Bloom, Let Creativity Grow Wild” which I cut down to the sizes of each box and box lids. I cut down and distressed the edges of each paper using my scissor’s edge, adhered the paper with white tacky glue to the boxes. Now to the stacking of the boxes to form a wedding cake, I glue the lids to the bottom of the boxes mostly to help make it sturdy. I stacked the boxes off set to give depth and places to rest and nestle in the flowers around the cake but first I used jute twine to run around the edges of each cake box layer. Love the natural raw feel the twine gives to the wedding cake.
Let’s get on with my favorite part of creating “Embellishing” or in this case decorating our wedding cake.
The Cake Topper-I decided I wanted to go outside the box (no pun intended) with the cake topper… I had this already altered dress form body in my stash which was perfect. I thought painting her (dress form) white and adding coffee stained cheese clothe that I had in my stash would be so fun. For her skirt, I decided to use Canvas Corp Tissue Stock in Kraft, White and Ivory which I die cut out the flowers using Sizzix Tattered Poinsettia die by Tim Holtz. As shown in the photo above – I gathered about 5 to 6 flowers at a time and rolled the petals to help give them texture. I glued each flower layer off setting them to help give each flower fullness. I also used poinsettia flowers cut out of the paper’s too, which help give a flow to the wedding cake matching the paper used on the boxes. Dress form skirt was so fun to create-I folded and glued each tissue stock flower in half and layered around off setting each color of the tissue stock flowers around the body of the dress form.
Here are a few close up’s of the altered wedding cake different layers. First is the beautiful airy tissue stock flowers adorn with leaf vine die cuts, cheese clothe and vintage mother of pearl buttons that I have found at flea markets, antique stores I find while out junking.
I so love how her (dress form) came out, the Canvas Corp Tissue Stock is so perfect for her skirt, so airy!
Love how I used the same tissue stock flowers as a crown neck collar with a tattered cheese clothe necklace.
And her not so perfect cheese clothe dress sleeves are not matching in size just makes me giggle inside thinking of the her free spirit. Last but not least, I nestled in real tiny pinecones that I have picked up on my walks,
I love how they give such a nature feel to the wedding cake.
So there you have it – my “Altered Wedding Cake” created with Canvas Corp Brands products, a stack of boxes, repurposed dress form, die cuts and a few junk finds.
Don’t you just want to gather up your own supplies and get creating, I know I do!
