Featured Crew Member – Kathy Clement

We are so excited everyday to work with an amazing group of designers, each one bringing something special to the group, sharing new techniques, new ways to use their craft supplies, showing us new approaches when working with our product lines, etc. Today we share the second post in our new series for 2016 where we will be featuring our Crew letting you get to know a bit about each one, where they are from, what inspires them, their favorite products, their favorite Canvas Corp Brands project and more.

Kathy brings an amazing sense of style and creative design to the Crew, with just the right vintage flare.  Kathy does not just work with paper and basic craft items, she brings in eclectic items into her work giving them a special uniqueness.  Kathy has a special eye for color and that is apparent in ever project she does.    Each piece Kathy creates is a work of art.

We ask each member of the Crew to create a 4×4 Canvas that represents themselves and their personal style.

Kathy’s piece was inspired by the 7gypsies Maritime Collection, but took on a life of its own as she accented it with shells, ribbons and other found objects.

Kathy is not only an wonderful designer, but is a wonderful leader within the Crew, providing great ideas, inspiration and support for all the members.

Kathy resides in….Apex, North Carolina, USA

Kathy’s design style can best be described as…Details, details, details! She is all about the details. Most of her work has a decidedly vintage vibe, but she can do girly grunge, too.

Kathy was inspired most to be creative by….”My mom had the soul of an artist. She taught me how to make cards with my Doodle Pad and Crayolas when I was very young. She was a seamstress and I like to think my love for color and design stems from all the hours I spent watching her sew.  She also was a magician when it came to upcycling…although she just called it being thrifty. I think the fact that I can spot an ugly duckling in a thrift store or yard sale and know that I can make it into something beautiful comes from her as well.”

Kathy is inspired today by… “Colors patterns and textures excites me! There is nothing like sitting down with a stack of beautiful paper and transforming it into a card, a mini album or a canvas. It so captivates me that I forget about all my troubles and stress.”

Kathy’s favorite Canvas Corp Brand Product is….”That is soooooo hard to do because I really love it all! Can I just say the papers rock? If I have to narrow it down to something more specific, I think I would have to say the 7 Gypsies line of papers, ephemera, and embellishments. But I am a huge fan of your textiles, too. To me, the two items go hand in hand.”

Kathy’s favorite project she has created for Canvas Corp Brands….
Santas-sleigh-recipe-holder-for-CCB-01

“I love to alter items. I found this really ugly little red sleigh at our local thrift store. The runners were falling off, the red paint was chipped and faded and, really it was ready for the trash bin. But I saw its potential and worked it up into this darling holiday recipe card holder. It was just so much fun to give this decrepit item a new life with paint, textiles, papers and found items. I love everything about that process.”  To see the entire project here is the post on our blog.

Kathy loves to teach her creative ideas to…… “I am teaching our granddaughters the joy of creating. They love to spend time in Nan’s studio and I’m amazed at how quickly they catch on to techniques. They are very keen on learning how to do what I do. They are future crew members in the making.”

Kathy is happiest doing…..”I am pretty much happy all the time. I love life, I love my family, I love my job. But I am probably happiest when I am creating. Whether I am in the kitchen creating something delicious for my family to eat, writing poetry, or in my studio playing with paper, giving my creativity room to grow and explore thrills me.”
Kathy’s place to be creative…..”My studio. I am inspired every single time I walk through this door. It’s my happy place!”

Step inside Kathy’s studio for a moment and you will be inspired to get organized, find creative ways to store items and reminded to stash non-craft items such as bottles, shells and vintage items as they might just be the perfect addition to your next project.

” Most of the furniture and shelving has been scavenged from yard sales, or custom built by my clever husband. My cutting/sewing desk and my work desk used to be our kitchen table. My husband cut the butcher block top in half and mounted one half on an old dresser (yard sale purchase) and the other onto a pair of file drawers, also purchased at yard sales. They are incredibly functional, and give me lots of room to spread out and work. The photo I’ve attached is of the infamous “Closet of Shame.” My readers know all about this magical closet!”

Something you might not know about Kathy…”I am a pretty awesome baker: bread, pies, cookies, cakes…you name it. I love to get in the kitchen and stir up some fun!”
“I have always loved art, but never thought that I could “do” art. (My background is in writing, but honestly, I can’t even draw a decent stick figure.) For most of my life, I was consumed with being a wife and mom, raising and homeschooling all 5 of our amazing kids. When the last one left the nest, I found myself caring for aging parents. I had not had time for myself in decades, was physically and emotionally exhausted and sort of lost my joy. One day, my eldest daughter popped by the house with some scrapbooking supplies and said, “Mom, give this a try. I think you might like it.” And as I played with those papers, this whole room in my personality opened up and began to blossom. Before I knew it, people were offering to purchase my cards and hand crafted creations and Kathy by Design was born. In addition to my blog and Etsy shop, I have had the honor of creating custom souvenir menus for BMW executive banquets held in amazing locations all over the world. I never imagined that my “retirement” would be such a rich and full time. I had no idea this incredible adventure was waiting for me like a lovely surprise package that was scheduled for delivery at just the right moment. You never know what adventures and joys are waiting for you, if you just keep your heart open and are willing to try new things.”

Kathy is a joy to work with and brings out such great things when she creates with our Canvas Corp Brands products.  It is always our goal with the design team to have them create in their style using our products and Kathy does this so amazingly well.
