Featured Maker – Katja Joulak Krankkala

From time to time we like to invite crafters to be our Guest Designer/Blogger for a month to challenge us to see things in a different way and so that we may learn more about our products through the eyes of a new designer. We kick of this serie of articles for 2018 by inviting a crafter that residents in Sweden – Katja Joulak Krankkala aka MezzaNotte.
Where are you from?

I am born in Finland but I have live all my life in Sweden. Now, I live in a small city near Stockholm.

How would you describe your design style?

I do many styles in mixedmedia, from shabby romantic to grungy and steampunk.

How long have you been creating?

I have been creating all my life. From, sewing, knitting to scrapbooking. I started with scrapbooking 2012- Then more to mixedmedia in 2014

We sent Katja some of our 7gypises Architextures together with some other Canvas Corp Brands scraps to  play with, and we love what she came up with.

” Layers of paper, burlap, fussycutting, packaging on this small canvas. On the top, you see the small dragonfly.”

What is your go to product right now?

I like to work with texture and layers and I am a fan of burlap.

Do you have a signature touch you like to include in all your pieces?

There is noting right now, that was something for me to think about.

What advice would you give to someone who gets in a creative slump?

You can start with a easy project and do a scraplift of yourself. Or you can go to Youtube to see some tutorials.

“In the background, you see a lovely piece from Architextures Junk Pack – Warehouse. Then some cutting on the embossed paper with flowers and leaves.  I have colored the flowers, leaves with Tattered Angel Mist.”

What is the oddest inspiration you have used for one of your projects?

There is inspiration everywhere, nature, people and of course on Internet.

Tell us one thing that people might not know about you.

I like to ironing clothes 😉

How often do you create?

I try to create little bit every day.

Do you jot down your ideas before you do them or do you create as you go?

I do no plans when I create, I go with flow. Often what I have on my table.

“I often like to use the packaging when I create. Here I have made a tag from a pack of stickers.

Layers of papers and some colors. Also made some fussy cutting from the paper Spring Sayings.  I love the butterflies on these papers.”

I live with my partner and my two children, in a small village the North of Sweden. I work as a Intensive Care Nurse (with Cardiology as speciality). My "style" is colourful and playful. I often use a lot of papers and embellishments. I try to have the photo in focus, and to reflect the feeling of the photo in the layout. I also makes cards and altered projects. If I would call my style something - well maybe Playful Punk Chic? (if i do a romantic layout, I can´t help giving it a playful twist...)
