Let’s start with the book cover which is filled with beautiful layers of color, embellishments and details. No two covers will look alike, but some of the techniques are fun to try. You can use a composition note book, ledger or the 7gypsies Kraft or Ivory Naked Journals. This journal is about 5″x7″, but you can adjust the size and measurements to the journal you choose.
Choose a book with a cover that you can embellish or cover your book with a piece of vintage fabric or printed canvas. If you start with a paper journal verses a hard cover journal you can sew the embellishments right to the front of your book. If your cover is hard, sew them together and attach them when complete with glue.
With your paints mist, paint, drop and splash color onto the book pages, fabric, papers, embellishments, canvas, lace, which ties them all together. Once they are dry you can layer them in a random way to get this look. Tatiana shows you the colors she choose, but you can determine your palette and by choosing neutral papers and fabric you can make it your own. When adding the color do so randomly and don’t feel like you need to cover the entire piece, leave some of the base showing which adds even more texture and details.
Let’s flip over and do the back next where you can see the same idea of layers and painting was used, but the look is very different, so have fun and layer the front and the back of your journal with things you love and in the colors you love.
Now let’s see what is inside this pretty journal….
When working with a blank journal you can add papers to add nice detail. Cover the entire page or rip it and cover part. Keep some areas for journaling. The basic papers from Canvas Corp can also be journaled upon as they are simple and a black pen will show up quite well. Add a stroke of paint, a piece of book page and a feather or stamp.
Die cut simple shapes out of the papers and embellishments like the feathers to add a simpler touch and you can use the die cuts and the cut out papers on various pages.
The layers have so much detail and look dimensional, but they are not so diminutional that the book will not close.
The mixture of kraft & black and kraft and white pages is a great backdrop for the colors and designs to pop out.
Glue or staple into place with each page a different combo of your painted pieces. Don’t throw anything way as they all are great little touches of detail. If you don’t have a feather die cut or stamp, you can include the Canvas Corp Chocolate & Ivory Feather Paper
So jazz up an old journal, decorate a new one to look old or create something one of a kind with just a few things around your craft room. It is fun to choose a color palette and theme to use throughout and mix and match them to make each page unique. Once done, make sure to add special thoughts, a daily memory or slip in some photos.
