IT´S ALL ABOUT CRAFTING WITH CANVAS – A CREW CHALLENGE

Did you know you can craft with canvas and fabric in many of the same ways you craft with paper?  The same tools, paints, inks, stamps, die machines (rotary), etc. all work so well with fabric.  We challenged our team to think outside of the paper and onto the blank canvas to show what can be done and wow we were blown way.  Some started with a canvas blank and created amazing art, others added touches of canvas, burlap and fabric to their projects and others created their own works of art with the canvas.

Here are a few tricks to know when crafting with fabric and some amazing inspiration from the Crew.
  1. Choose a liquid or iron on glue when working with canvas, burlap or other fabrics.
  2. There is no need to prepare the fabric before you begin crafting onto the surface.
  3. Choose a pigment or permanent ink when stamping or writing onto canvas.  You can stamp on burlap as well, but you will want to choose larger designs so that they show up with the textured fabric.
  4. You can iron onto the fabric like you would a t-shirt, so shop the iron on department for something different.
  5. If you plan to wash your project, you will want to use fabric or permanent paints (Tattered Angels High Impact, Glimmer Glaze, Glimmer Glam and Stained Glass are all great choices)  If you are not planning to wash your creation Glimmer Mist and Color Wash are great options too.
  6. For a vintage look wash the fabrics and let them dry to remove the sizing.  You can also wash them in coffee or tea, or make it easy and mist them with any o the neutral tone mists and let dry and create away.
  7. You can sew paper and fabric just as you would make and outfit and it is a lot of fun.  If sewing is not your thing, sketch stitch marks or stamp them on.
  8. Did you know you can mail just about anything, so try a fabric envelope or postcard and send a little fabric love.
  9. Bring back your cross-stitching love and try it on burlap, the look is awesome.
  10. Pull out trims, laces, buttons and other sewing notions and add them to your creations.
  11. You can use just about any craft product on canvas with amazing results – Rub-ons, stencils, stamps, die cutting machines (rotary), markers, paints, mists, iron-ons, texture mediums, pens, staplers, etc.  grab a few scraps and try out your favorite techniques to see which one you love the most on the fabric.
  12. Most of the items are made with 10 ounce canvas, a nice quality, but you can also get 14 ounce which is really heavy duty and lighter weight options if you need them.

Now we have you thinking, so let us inspire you.

Check out this amazing video with so many ideas of how you can use canvas for your craft project.

You can stitch right into the burlap and then decorate around it for a great look.

You can transform the fabric into any color with your favorite paint and once dry, decorate it your way. Keep in mind if you are washing the item to choose a fabric paint or medium.

For this challenge I used a wine bag that was included in my dt pack. I decided to cut the bottom part and create an opening. My goal was to make a dress for a wooden mannequin I had bought from IKEA. To decorate the fabric, I used Tattered Angels Mists, a stencil and some gloss gel paste.I used the base of the bag to create a hat for my mannequin. Also used some trim ribbons to decorate the edges of the dress. I really hope you like it!

If you like a distressed look you can soak the fabric in tea or coffee or mist them to get this great look.

Halloween and Fall Canvas bag stamped with High Impact paint in black and brown. Colorwashed with brown Colorwash pain to give a distressed look. Skull was colored with Tattered Angels Glimmer mist in yellow, orange and pink on 7 gypsies Canvas! Other side used 7 gypsies colored burlap in orange and teal and canvas to cut out pumpkins! Fall is coming and I love how this turned out!

Use your favorite Mixed Media techniques on sheets of canvas and then add them to your projects.

Wanted to do something different with this project. A friend gave me a bottle to use and when I thought it would be bigger than the bag I decided to make it look like the bottle was escaping the bag. Turning it into a “flower vase” just kinda stemmed from there. I not only used the canvas bag in the project, I used the blank canvas piece (as well as other burlap pieces) to create the flowers for the project.

Stamp or draw your favorite doodle art and color them in for a great look.

India is a country which is rich in its cultural and varied heritage. Being an Indian, I’m always attracted to the various art forms in India. When the CCB summer challenge for the Crew was announced, I felt immensely happy because the theme was to use Canvas. I had got a canvas zipper pouch with one side canvas and other side burlap as part of my Crew kit. From day one my hands were itching to use it for painting some Indian style design. Finally got my wishes fulfilled. I have hand painted this free style Indian Madhubani design with Tattered angels Color wash Purple and Tattered Angels Basic Glimmer mists kit – Bright.

black jute and a large eye needle allows you to sew freehand and we love the look.

I love to take my art projects with me when I’m carpooling kids all around. This burlap and canvas zipper tote is the perfect little holder for all my pens that I take on the go. I love that the bulap on the one side is exactly the sizing in the holes to cross stitch so I decided to cross stitch the word “Art” on the front using frayed pieces of black burlap. I then stitched on this fabulous burlap flower and a cute button from my stash to match. I am looking forward to carrying my pens in style.

Add color and texture with different burlap colors.

Are you waiting for autumn. I am not sure, but I waiting for meeting with little squirrels in our parks, so made this lovely card with squirrel on the tree, that I made from die-cutting leaves and flowers. Of course. I add a little moss on my tree with the help of Canvas Corp Burlap Sheet – Green.

Wrap it up and give the gift of your art along with a bottle of wine, flavored water or oil.

There are so many canvas items in Canvas Corp Brands shop and so many ideas how use them for art and everyday life! I turned Rustic Canvas Wine Tote with tie ( it was in my DT box) into bright Summer Lemonade Tote using some different colorful fabric, burlaps and flowers for decorating. Then I added lemonade title, tag and colored image from Mixology collection. And I couldn’t stop and made a card as a pair.

Transform your canvas to any color in a snap and layer them your way.

I got inspiration to made card with fabric – based canvas cotton. I used burlap, canvas and cheese cloth. Printed canvas is awesome materials for funny and different card. I cut out that paint brush from printed canvas. I sewed the edges of the pattern with the sewing machine to the support bracket. I colored paint brush canvas with Glimmer Glaze Paint. This card was so funny to made.

Add beads, buttons and trinkets to your canvas and then add color and details for a great look.

I decided to make a storage solution that wouldn’t take up room on my worktable. I chose a sunburst design, since this was a “summer” challenge, but since my scraproom doesn’t have yellow or orange in it, I used beachy-coloured mists to finish it.

Freehand onto anything canvas just as you would a stretched canvas.

The Summer Crew Challenge to use the Burlap and Canvas Zipper Tote was the perfect opportunity to find and corral my pens. I have many pens, in a variety of colors, but I can NEVER find them! I sit down in a study or conference, sigh deeply, and turn to the person next to me for a writing utensil. No more!!! Now I will open my brightly painted bag with a swish of its tassel and offer the person nearest me a pen.

Twist and roll canvas to make adorable flowers and then paint them to match your style.

First I glimmer misted the canvas and then I cut it into strips. I created flowers by twisting the strips together and adhering to the zipper pouch that I sponge painted. I made some flowers the same way from twine. I hand cut the leaves and added the veins with a water color marker. I spritzed the leaves with water to soften the hard lines of the veins. I adhered the canvas flowers, twine circles and leaves to the pouch, added some gems and dripped navy glimmer mist over it.

Add brads, buttons, charms and other findings you have stashed away.

I love to travel with things I’ve made, but let’s be honest, Paper does not always handle being handled too much. Using some of the best paint from Tattered Angels and a premade tote offered by Canvas Corp, I can make my tote and take it too!

Canvas plays well with others, so find other flexible items in your stash like cheese cloth, mesh and other cool textures that let you create 3 dimensional works of art.

With this canvas challenge, I knew I wanted to do something outside the box with the zippered tote & canvas table runner I had. So I got out my manni and played fashion designer! The lower skirt is 7Gypsies Gypsy Moments Under the Cover paper that was dipped in liquid starch, then crumpled/folded and dried with a heat gun to make it stiff. The metal over-skirt has books and rusty safety pins hanging from it – those 2 pieces of metal were put in the trash by hubby but I rescued them! The metal book locket opens to reveal a Gibson Girl cut from packaging & a ‘pretty’ Architextures rub on. Then there’s a 7Gypsies puffy sticker dress form & a rusty ‘junk’ sign. The top half of the manni was covered in cheesecloth, painted black, then painted over with Tattered Angels Rustic Glimmer Glam & spritzed with Tattered Angels Iridescent Gold Glimmer Mist – kind of looks like lizard or snake skin! I used a long zipper for a harness-type embellishment with a 7Gypsies puffy sticker thimble. I also used Architextures to make a choker with a gemstone. The back has a pleated canvas train made from the runner and I used the canvas zipper bag as a bustle of sorts and added paper flowers made from the Gypsy Moments paper. And she’s wrapped up with a black tulle shawl. So much fun to be challenged and to use CCB products in unconventional ways!

Products from Canvas Corp Brands: 7Gypsies Gypsy Moments, Architextures Parchment Rub-On – Pose, Tattered Angels Glimmer Glam – Rustic, Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist – Iridescent Gold, Architextures Short Base – Borders, 7Gypsies Trinkets Puffy Stickers, Notions (from Michaels), 7Gypsies Findings Puffy Sticker, Dress Form (from Michaels), CCB Table Runner – Canvas, CCB Canvas Bag – Burlap & Canvas Zipper Tote, CCB packaging, 16″ paper mache mannequin, Cheesecloth, Black tulle, Black gesso, Rusty metal Junk sign, Rusty craft wire/safety pins, Zipper, Mini book trinkets/book locket, Metal cage material, Liquid starch

rub-ons love canvas and 7gypsies Parchment rub ons will give you a soft, vintage vibe.

I would like to show you my take on the Canvas Corp Brands Summer Challenge: all crew members were sent a Canvas Corp canvas item, in my case a “Little Flat Tote“ (size 6×6 inch), and the challenge is to “use it EITHER in a project you often do – a layout, a card or a art journal spread for example OR use the item you were sent as it is“. Since I love to create art journal pages I decided to use my canvas item on an an art journal spread which was a lot of fun to do and something I had never done before!

Products from Canvas Corp Brands Corp: Canvas Corp “Little Flat Tote“ size 6×6 inch, 7gypsies Architextures “Vintage Pink“ Mix and Match Book, 7gypsies Architextures Parchment Rub-On set called “Inspire“, Canvas Corp 12×12 paper “Black and Ivory Love Script“, Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist – “Turquoise Blue“, Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist – “Black Cherry“, attered Angels Chalkboard Mist – “Medallion“

We have enjoyed seeing all the amazing ideas our Crew has come up with our canvases.  We hope you are inspired and have ideas of your own.

If you don’t know about the amazing Canvas Corp Brands Creative Crew, we have to tell you what it is all about.  125 amazing designers that represent over 25 countries, represent a wide range of design styles and love to be creative.  We have created friendships around the world that will last a lifetime.  We open the door to new Crew members every October, so keep an eye out if you would like to be part of this amazing Crew.
