Jaine Drake – Creative Crew Member Interview

It’s time for another post in our 2017 Canvas Corp Crew Interviews. We are extremely privileged to be able to work with a group of over a 100 of amazing designers from around the world. They have all come together to create, share ideas, support each other, let us know what we can do better and remind us of what we are doing well.  Our Crew members contribute projects to our blog, design with our products on their blogs, create models for our trade shows, packaging and other fun little projects.  We love to hear what they have to say, to be inspired by their work and to learn new things everyday.
Today, we get to know Jaine Drake.

Where do you reside?
I live in the heart of Europe in a small but beautiful country called Luxembourg. Most people tell me they’ve passed through on the way to somewhere else.

Describe your design style…
Eclectic. Definitely eclectic. It depends on my mood and what I’m working on. I can go from grungy mixed media one day to all clean and simple graphic style the next.

Who or what do you give credit to inspiring your creativity?
When I was younger I spent alot of time with my grandmother learning knitting, sewing, crochet and gardening. She always had pencils and paper at home and we’d spend hours drawing silly things. It wasn’t until I grew up I learned that at the age when most young women had left school and were thinking about finding a husband or getting a job somewhere, my Great Grandfather actually encouraged my Grandma and her brother to attend art college where she learned technical drawing and sign writing. I’m proud to have her portfolio of work in my studio and occasionaly I look through the drawings. She has been the biggest influence on my creative life.

What inspires you most today?
Oh that’s most definitely my surroundings. Where I live is a valley with forest all around me. I’m out in the forest most mornings with the dog and if I see something interesting I’ll take a photo with my phone to sketch out when I get home. The sketch might find its way into my journals or become the idea for a stamp or stencil. I’m very influenced by the colours in nature too and you’ll see green coming up everywhere.

What is your favorite Canvas Corp Brand Product? and why? Just one please!!!!
The Plain Jane Simply Sheer range of mists are my favourite. The colours are so vibrant and jewel like. I love to use them with a paint brush and not as a spray as they make beautiful watercolours. Don’t get me wrong I do love a bit of mica but these sprays are just pure colour and an absolute joy to use.

Why is it your favorite?
This travel journal was made to take with me on holiday. Every year I hand make my travel journal as I have to take my supplies with me where ever I go. This one had a hand stitched binding which I was so proud of. I used to hand sew my books all the time but I got into the habit of simplifying them with a couple of long stitches or staples so going back to a more complicated binding was so exciting for me and it actually started me off doing more like this.

Do you teach and if so tell us a bit about what you teach, where you go and some of your favorite places?
I teach to a group of local women and children once a month. It gives me great pleasure and it’s so rewarding to see the same people coming back time after time and telling me how inspiring my classes are. We’ve done everything from card making and stamping to scrapbooking and mixed media canvases.

I am the happiest doing…
something in my studio, with no deadline, no agenda, just me, my journal and some supplies. If i’m not in my studio at all during the day I start to get withdrawl symptoms. I have to do something creative each day otherwise I’d go insane.

My favorite place to be creative…
Sketching in the garden on a sunny day with all my supplies spread out around me, of course that doesn’t happen all that often but in an ideal world that’s where I’d be.

Tell us one cool detail about your studio or craft space…
It’s hard to pick one detail but if I was to narrow it down, it would have to be that I overlook the most amazing countryside which never fails to inspire me. When the weather is good I relocate outside as much as possible.

Tell us one thing fun about you we might not know…
When I was younger I was a disco dancing champion. Uh…. there I’ve said it! Satin trousers, sparkly boob tube the lot. Eeek, you had to be there! It’s quite normal to find me in my studio with a disco Spotify playlist playing in the background.

Share with us anything about your creative life that you feel would inspire others…
I’ve been writing and designing for Craft Stamper Magazine for many years now and absolutely love it. I knew I could produce work as good as the contributers at the time and sent lots and lots of work in for consideration. Most of it was overlooked but as soon as that first piece was accepted I was overjoyed. From there I ended up contributing to two other magazines but Craft Stamper has been a constant in my life. I say if you want something keep on going for it, don’t give up and eventually your dreams will come true.

You can see more of Jaine’s work on her Instagram, blog and Facebook.

Have a great day!
